Rules Tip of the Day: When in any other zone but the stack, the value of ‘X’ in cards with an ‘X’ in the mana cost is treated as zero. When on the stack, X is equal to whatever was chosen when the spell was played.
Q: How do Tomorrow, Azami's Familiar and Sylvan Library interact?
A: Because Tomorrow, Azami's Familiar replaces the act of drawing a card with looking at the top three and putting one of those cards in your hand, when you resolve the second portion of Sylvan Library's ability you will not be able to choose two cards you have drawn that turn. This means that including the normal draw per turn, you will end up with three additional cards in your hand and not have to pay any life.
Q: If I activate Ornate Kanzashi and I reveal a land, but I have already played my own land that turn, does the Ornate Kanzashi's ability override the "one land per turn" rule and allow me to play the revealed land anyway? It seems like it grants me permission to do so by saying "you may play that card this turn. "
A: No, you will not be able to play this revealed land. Ornate Kanzashi let's you play the revealed card, but it does not let you override the normal restrictions placed on the number of lands you can play in a turn.
Q: I have read a few conflicting reports on creature enchantments and Licids. When a Licid becomes ad enchantment, one ruling I've seen says that they retain every effect that they had while a creature, and thus the enchantments are on them still, they just don't do anything or do the enchantments drop off when the Licid changes?
A: If the local enchantments on the Licid were creature enchantments, then the enchantments will fall off as they stop being creatures. However something like Confiscate will stay on, as it is an enchant permanent.
Q: If my opponent plays Distress or Cabal Therapy, and I play Shunt targeting the discard spell, do I get to see his hand?
A: Yes. Both of those cards instruct the targeted player to reveal their hand., This means to all players in the game, and this is not changed by the fact that you redirected their discarding spell at them.
Q: I am playing a blue control deck. My opponent plays Chalice of the Void with 2 counters on it. Can I play a 2 mana cost spell, like Echoing Truth, and then Stifle the Chalice?
A: Yes that works. Chalice of the Void's ability that counters spells with the appropriate converted mana cost is a triggered ability; it can be countered by Stifle.
Q: I was reading Extroplaner Lens and was wondering if it would work for the Urza-Tron? Say I have Urza’s Mine imprinted on it. Would I, in effect, produce four mana with one Mine? This is assuming I have the whole Tron in play.
A: If you had the full set of Urza's lands in play, and an Extraplanar Lens with an Urza's Mine imprinted on it, then an Urza's Mine in play would generate three mana. Normally a Mine with the full 'Tron' out would produce 2 mana, and the Lens makes this make just one more, it does not double the output of the mana ability.
Q: If I have Shifting Sky in play making everything white and I also have a Stromgald Cabal out, will I be able to counter Bringer of the Blue Dawn my opponent plays, or any permanent he plays, if I tap the Cabal and have it deal 1 damage to me?
A: No. Shifting Sky makes permanents the chosen color, it does not change the color of spells on the stack. Also Strongald Cabal causes you to pay one life not one receive a point of damage.
Q: I was wondering if City in a Bottle forces a player who plays with Arabian Nights mountains to sacrifice them just because City finds the symbol on the permanent.
A: Yes they will have to be sacrificed. While they may have been included in that set by accident, they are considered to be from that expansion because the expansion symbol appears on them.
