Rules Tip of the Day: Effects that allow you to play a card that is in a zone other than your hand only allow you to play them. These cards are not in your hand, and you cannot discard them or do anything else with them that you could with a card that is actually in your hand.
Q: How does Ronin Warclub work with Ninjitsu abilities? Will it equip to the Ninja that was brought into play? Or will a creature equipped with it keep it after the Ninja comes into play?
A: The Ninja is a new creature that comes into play, so Ronin Warclub will become attached to it when the Ninjutsu ability resolves.
Q: If one was to sacrifice a creature put into play by Goryo’s Vengeance before the end of the turn would the remove creature at end of turn effect still happen?
A: No. The legendary creature brought into play by Goryo's Vengeance will only be removed from the game if it is still in play when the delayed triggered ability by Goryo's Vengeance resolves.
Q: My friend has out Genju of the Spires he activates it and attacks me. I have a Quilmane Baku with four counters on it. My question to you is how many counters does it take off my Baku to target his Genju-animated land, if any? I say 1 because of its original cost he says its 0 and that I cant target the Genju. Who is right if either of us.
A: He is correct. You are targeting the animated land and not the Genju enchantment, and the animated land has a converted mana cost of zero. Because of this, you will remove zero counters from the Quilmane Baku in order to return this animated land to its owner's hand.
Q: If I play Isochron Scepter and Imprint Ethereal Haze or Glacial Ray, can I then use the Scepter's ability and Splice another card onto the copy?
A: Yes, you can splice text onto the copy of the Imprinted Arcane card when the Scepter's ability resolves and you play the copy. This also works for copies of Arcane cards made by Panoptic Mirror and Spellweaver Helix.
Q: When the ability of my Toshiro Umezawa triggers and I have Ground Seal in play, can I play an Instant from my graveyard?
A: No. Toshiro's ability targets an Instant in your graveyard and Ground Seal prevents any cards in a graveyard from being targeted. Toshi's ability will leave the stack without doing anything as you can not legally choose a target.
Q: My opponent attacks me with Tephraderm. I block it with face-down Karona's Zealot and I pay the Morph cost. What happens? It seems we have a loop.
A: First of all, I assume that you choose the Tephraderm as the target of Karona's Zealot's ability. Anyway, this does not create a loop. When combat damage resolves in this situation, the Zealot will deal two points of damage to the Tephraderm, and because of the Zealot's re-direction ability Tephraderm will deal four points of damage to itself. This will cause Tephraderm's ability to trigger twice; once for the two points of damage dealt to Tephraderm by the Zealot and once for the four points of damage dealt to Tephraderm by itself. However, before these abilities can go on the stack state-based effects are checked and Tephraderm will go to the graveyard as it has received lethal damage. Then Tephraderm's triggered abilities will go on the stack and when they eventually resolve the Tephraderm will not be in play, because of this the Tephraderm will be unable to deal additional damage to itself and the Zealots replacement ability will be unable to redirect more damage to it, so the Zealot will end up receiving two points of damage.
Q: I have Isochron Scepter in play with Mind Bend Imprinted on it. Could I change an opponent's Mountain into Plains or in some way cause the Mountain to produce white mana instead of red?
A: Yes that works. Just target the Mountain and when the Mind Bend copy resolves choose to change all instance of the word 'mountain' to 'plains.' This will change the sub-type of that land, and therefore the color of mana it produces. it will not change the name of the land, so it'll still be a permanent with the name Mountain and the sub-type of Plains.
Q: If I play Feldon's Cane beforeI play Shahrazad, can I shuffle my library to have four Shahrazad in my subgame?
A: No. Spells go to the graveyard as the last part of their resolution. When you are playing a subgame the Shahrazad that is causing you to play this subgame is still on the stack in the main game, or subgame ‘above’ it.
