Rules Tip of the Day: Abilities that trigger during the announcement of a spell or ability will wait to go on the stack until the announcement is completed. This triggered ability will then go on the stack on top of the played spell or ability.
Q: I control Kira, Great Glass-Spinner, and a Genju. My opponent plays Reap and Sow with Entwine on the land that the Genju enchants. In response to him playing Reap and Sow, I activate the Genju. Am I correct in assuming that the Reap and Sow is countered and he doesnt get to search for a land?
A: No, because the targeted land was not a creature when the Reap and Sow was played, this land will not have had the triggered ability granted by Kira at that time and therefore could not have triggered.
Q: If I play Fractured Loyalty on one of my opponent's creatures and target it with Tooth of Chiss-Goria to bring it under my control, would In the Web of War be triggered to give it +2/+0?
A: No, this creature is not coming into play, it is just changing controllers. Because of this In the Web of War's ability will not trigger.
Q: If I play Myojin of Cleansing Fire, and then I play Otherworldly Journey on it, after I have removed the counter will it come back into play with a Divinity counter as well as the +1/+1 counter?
A: No, it'll only return to play with a +1/+1 counter. When it comes into play from the removed from game zone, it was not played from a player's hand, so it will not get a counter.
Q: I have Psychatog in play, five cards in my hand and five cards under my Moonring Mirror. At the beginning of my Upkeep I put the Mirror’s second ability on the stack. I then add to the stack the Psychatog’s ability to discard a cards to give him +1/+1 [five times]. The stack resolves giving a total of +5/+5 to the 'tog, then the Mirror's ability removes my hand from the game, which is now 0 cards, and putting the 5 cards under the Mirror into my hand. I then draw a card and put one under the Mirror an then discard 6 cards to the 'tog giving him a grand total of +11/+11 and attack. Is this legal?
A: Yes that is legal; you can respond to the Moonring Mirror's triggered ability and discard the cards that are currently in your hand before they are removed from game by the Mirror. If you do, you will still get the card removed by the Mirror put into your hand.
Q: Can Harvest Wurm come into play when there is no basic land in my graveyard?
A: Yes it will come into play and its ability will trigger and go on the stack. However if when its triggered ability resolves you can not return a basic land in your graveyard to your hand, then you will be forced to sacrifice the Wurm.
Q: Do restrictions on mana usage (such as those from Mishra's Workshop) and benefits from mana usage (such as those from Boseiju, Who Shelters All) transfer along with the mana when one uses a card such as Drain Power?
A: No. When an ability produces a type of mana, it refers to only its color or lack of color. Any restrictions or additional effects associated with that man is not created when an effect copies a type of mana.
Q: I have both Noetic Scales and Skullcage in play. My opponent has four cards in his hand and one creature with power greater than four in play. Does the Skullcage trigger, and if so, can I make sure he takes damage from that ability?
A: Skullcage will trigger at the beginning of each opponent’s upkeep regardless of the number of cards they have in their hand. This is not a conditional trigger; the check to see if damage is dealt is made when the Skullcage ability resolves. In order to make sure damage is dealt, put the Skullcage triggered ability on the stack first, followed by the Noetic Scales ability. This way, unless he finds a way to discard or play a card, he will have five cards in his hand when the Skullcage triggered ability resolves.
Q: I understand that with one Krark’s Thumb the replacement clause makes it only trigger once, but if you have two or more (with Mirror Gallery) wouldn't the extra flips trigger the others? So, would this cause the infinite loop, or would the replacement clause protect it from this, too?
A: Replacement effects do not trigger, they just replace the specified event with something else. And a single replacement effect can only be applied to a single event once. So this does not create a loop. What happens with two Thumbs in play is that when you would flip one coin, you flip four and choose one.
