Ask the Judge, 03/31/2005
Rules Tip of the Day: If a creature deals no damage, either because its power is zero when damage is assigned or the damage is prevented, then abilities that trigger when this creature would deal damage will not trigger.
Q: If I have some way to give my creatures Haste, can I play two Goblin Cohort and attack with them both during the same turn?
A: Yes. In fact, if you can play and give a single Cohort Haste, then you can attack with it. This is because the Cohort's ability only cares that you have played a creature spell that turn. It does not matter if this creature spell was played before the Cohort came into play or if it is the Cohort spell itself.
Q: Will the second part of Hokori, Dust Drinker's ability (at the beginning of upkeep, untap a land) allow me to untap an Island when Choke is in play?
A: Yes. Choke only prevents Islands from untapping during their controller's untap steps. Hokori's ability untaps a land in your upkeep step, so you can choose to untap an Island at that time.
Q: If my opponent Eradicates one of my creatures, and in response I play Otherwordly Journey targeting the same creature, does the spell remove the rest of them from my library or does it fizzle since the target is no longer in play when it resolves?
A: Eradicate has only a single target. If this target is not legal when Eradicate attempts to resolve, then the Eradicate will be countered on resolution (note that there's no such thing as fizzle in Magic). That means that your opponent will not be able to search your hand, library, and graveyard for anything.
Q: I have Frostling as the only creature in play. My opponent tries to steal it with Vedalken Shackles. Can I sacrifice it to target itself?
A: That is legal. The reason is that you choose targets of an spell or ability before you pay any costs and Frostling is a creature in play when you choose targets.
Q: I am participating in a multiplayer game, and my life has been reduced to zero and I am dead. My friend plays Sway of the Stars after I am dead. Do I come back into the game at seven, or am I done playing completely once I am dead?
A: No, once you are removed from a game, effects cannot be applied to you at all.
Q: A friend of mine plays the Life deck and we (he and I) have had an ongoing argument with the judges as to whether or not you can target Daru Spiritulist multiple times with Shuko if it's your only creature, the idea being to give it 'infinite' toughness then sacrifice it to a Starlit Sanctum for 'infinite' life.
A: Yes that is legal. The equip ability does not require that you target a creature that is not currently equipped by that equipment. You can target the creature that is already equipped with Shuko. Note that this trick doesn't work with Lightning Greaves, since once it's equipped, the creature is untargetable. You'd need a second creature to make it work.
Q: Does Nether Void effect abilities that require a mana cost? For example, does Isochron Scepter now take five to tap instead of just two?
A; Nether Void's effect is applied to any spell that is played, which includes the copy created by Isochron Scepter. While it still only costs two to activate Isochron Scepter's ability, it will cost an addition three mana to make sure the copy of the Imprinted card is not countered by Nether Void.
Q: I had Vedalken Shackles in play and controlled one of my opponent's creatures with it. I activated Proteus Staff, returning his creature to the bottom of his library. Do I get to search my deck or does he search his?
A: Proteus Staff's text instructs the controller of that creature to reveal cards from your library until you reveal a creature card. As you were the controller of this creature when it was last in play, that means you will be the one to reveal cards from your library. It does not matter that the targeted creature card is owned by your opponent.
