Rules Tip of the Day: When a permanent changes controller, it does not count as coming into or leaving play, so abilities that trigger on either of those two things happening will not trigger.
Q: My hand is an Arcane spell, Horobi's Whisper, and Torrent of Stone. I have several lands in play, including two mountains, and two cards on my graveyard. Can I announce the Arcane spell Splicing the other two cards, paying the mana, then sacrificing the Mountains and then removing the 4 cards? I think the basic question is if the costs are all simultaneous or can I pay in the above way and splice all spells?
A: You can do what you have described. When you get to the portion of playing a spell where you pay costs you first put all the necessary mana in your mana pool and then pay costs in any order. So you can pay the splice cost of Torrent of Stone first and this way those two sacrificed mountains will be in your graveyard and you will be able to remove them from the game to pay the splice cost of Horobi's Whisper.
Q: If I have Kiki-jiki in play, and I copy Rukh Egg, when it dies will I get a flying creature from the Egg?
A: Yes you will. If this token Rukh Egg is sacrificed at the end of a turn due to the delayed triggered ability from Kiki-Jiki's ability then the 4/4 flying Rukh token will not come into lay until the next end of turn step in the next turn.
Q: I'd like to know if Umezawa's Jitte gains charge counters if the equipped creature dies, and whether they stay with the Jitte if it is equipped to another creature?
A: The charge counters are put on Umezawa's Jitte and will remain on the Jitte even if the equipped creature leaves play, becomes unequipped, or the Jitte becomes equipped to another creature.
Q: I play Kodama's Reach and Splice on Horobi's Whisper. I do not control any Swamps when I play this spell, but I put one into play tapped when the Reach resolves. Will the creature targeted by the Horobi's Whisper spliced on text be destroyed?
A: Yes, all that matters is that you do control a swamp when you carry out the Horobi's Whisper instructions. As this text is spliced onto Kodama's Reach, you will put a Swamp into play first before you deal with the splice text. At that point you will control a swamp, so the targeted creature will be destroyed.
Q: Can you use Jamuraan Lion's ability after target player has declared blockers?
A: Yes you can use it after blockers are declared, but the ability won't do anything. Making it illegal for a creature to block after blockers have been declared will not cause that creature to stop being a blocking creature of prevent it from dealing combat damage to the creature it is blocking.
Q: I have Stormscape Familiar or Pearl Medallion or something that reduces the cost to play a spell and I want to play a face down card of the appropriate color. Should I pay the 3 mana or can I benefit from the reduction?
A: No, Morph cards played face down do not have a color and are not affected by the Medallions or other cost-reducers.
Q: I play Radiate and Time Warp. Do I take my turn from Time Warp and then have another right after from the copy Radiate gave me or does my opponent get to go after I have taken my first additional turn from casting Time Warp then its back to me again?
A: If this is a two player game, then the Radiate will only make a single copy of Time Warp targeting your opponent. It will not make another copy targeting you. This is because Radiate only makes additional copies of the targeted spell for each potential object that is not already targeted by this spell. As you are targeted by this Time Warp, it will not make another copy of Time Warp targeting you. However, if you did this, then you would take your extra turn first before your opponent takes his. This is because the original Time Warp will resolve last and the most recently created turn will be taken first. But it's probably best to not do this, as all you are doing is giving your opponent an extra turn.
Q: The following situation happened on Magic Online. Was it handled correctly or was it a bug? My opponent controls Opal-Eye, Konda's Yojimbo and has tapped out to play Cursed Ronin. I play Lava Spike targeting the opponent, Splicing Glacial Ray targeting the Ronin. My opponent taps Opal-Eye, selecting Lava Spike as the source. Both my opponent and I expected that Opal-Eye would get hit with all 5 damage since the Ray is Spliced onto the Spike, so the Spike is doing all the damage. However MODO assigned 3 to Opal-Eye and 2 to Cursed Ronin. Is this right?
A: MTGO handled the situation correctly. When this Lava Spike with Glacial Ray text spliced on resolves, it will deal damage two separate times; 3 to the player and 2 to the Ronin. Opal-Eye Konda's ability only redirects damage from a chosen source the next time that it would deal damage, not all instances that it would deal damage during its resolution, so only the first three from the Lava Spike text will be redirected. Similarly, if Lava Spike with Glacial Ray is played and the target for the Glacial Ray portion is the same as the Lava Spike target then the targeted player would have to activate a Circle of Protection: Red twice in order to prevent all of the damage from this spell. If this Lava Spike had two Glacial Rays spliced onto it, and all three targets were the same player, that player would have to a activate a Circle of Protection: Red three times in order to prevent all of the damage.
