Ask the Judge, 04/18/2005
Rules Tip of the Day: Unless specified, an activated ability can be played as many times as it can be paid for.
Q: If I have Shirei, Shizo's Caretaker and Eternal Witness in play, and play Lose Hope on the Witness, will the it come back into play at the end of the tur because he was a 1/0 when it went to the graveyard?
A: Yes, Eternal Witness will return to play as its power was one when it left play. This is the trigger condition for Shirei's ability; it does not matter that the power of the Witness when it returns to play is two.
Q: If I imprint Disrupting Shoal on Isochron Scepter, will I be able to play the Shoal using its alternate cost and still counter spells with the converted mana cost of what I removed?
A: No, the Scepter's ability does not allow you to play the copy via any of that cards alternate costs. Your only option is to play the copy Disrupting Shoal without paying it's mana cost and having the value of X equal to zero.
Q: When Grip of Chaos is in play, does it randomize targets for creature enchantments?
A: Yes, the target of a local enchantment will be chosen randomly when it is played as local enchantments target when played.
Q: May I pay Echo costs for an artifact creature with Mishra's Workshop?
A: No. The Echo costs is not a cost associated with playing that spell, and you can only use mana from Mishra's Workshop to play artifact spells.
Q: When Argothian Wurm is in play anyone can sacrifice a land to put it on top of owner's library, like a turn later or something?
A: Players can only sacrifice a land when Argothian Wurm's coming into play triggered ability resolves. If the Wurm is already in play, then they are not given that option of sacrificing a land to put it on top of its owners library.
Q: My opponent has a Legendary Land in play. I play my copy of that same land. Because dropping a land does not pass priority and SBEs do not check if priority is not passed, will both lands stay in play until priority is passed thereby allowing me to tap my land for mana before SBEs check and send both copies of that legendary land to the graveyard? If not, why?
A: While priority is not passed from one player to another after you play a land, the person who played the land will regain priority. Because of this state-based effects are checked and these two Legendary Lands will the same name will go to the graveyard without the opportunity to tap it for mana.
Q: If I play multiple High Tide in the same turn will I produce more mana?
A: Yes, the effect from multiple High Tides is cumulative. If more than one resolves, then you will get more than one additional blue mana when you tap an Island for mana.
Q: If I have Fork on the stack, copying whatever, and then turn Mischievous Quanar face up, copying Fork, would I then be able to copy the initial Fork with Quanar's copy, and start a loop of copying Forks?
A: While this can become a loop, this is not one that you cannot break. To continue to choose to copy the original Fork when a copy Fork resolves is stalling. Eventually you will be required to choose to copy something else (like spell targeted by the original Fork) to advance the game.
