Rules Tip of the Day: Abilities that trigger on combat damage being dealt will not trigger when damage from spells and abilities is dealt in the combat phase.
Q: I understand that when all creatures, even tokens, take lethal damage or are destroyed, that they go to the graveyard in some way, shape or form, enough to trigger 'going to the graveyard' abilities but what about Final Judgment which removes them from the game entirely. Will that bypass any 'graveyard bound' triggers?
A: If a creature is removed from the game then it will not go to the graveyard at all. Creatures removed from the game by Final judgment will not trigger any abilities that trigger when a creature goes to the graveyard (and there's no such thing as "on the way to the graveyard"--Sheldon).
Q: I have Viridian Zealot blocking an opponent's creature that is equipped with Umezawa's Jitte and Sword of Fire and Ice. I stack the damage and then sacrifice the Zealot to destroy the Sword before combat damage resolves. The question is, does the Jitte receive the two charge counters?
A: No it will not, as when combat damage resolves the Viridian Zealot is not in play, so the Jitte's ability will not trigger as the equipped creature does not deal any damage.
Q: Can you sacrifice Krack-Clan Ironworks to itself for two mana?
A: Yes, there is nothing to prevent you from paying the cost of Krack-Clan Ironworks' ability by sacrificing the Ironworks itself.
Q: If I have Mycosynth Lattice in play and play Sculpting Steel I can copy an Enchant Creature card, but do I get a chance to declare a target or would it come into play untargeted and be put into the graveyard?
A: Yes, you can choose Sculpting Steel to come into play as a creature enchantment that is now an artifact due to Mycosyth Lattice. However, you choose the target of a creature enchantment when you play them. This means that this Sculpting Steel will not come into play attached to a legal target as you were not given the opportunity to choose one. Because of this the Sculpting Steel will go to the graveyard as it is illegally in play.
Q: Does Thieves' Auction trigger removed-from-game and comes-into-play abilities?
A: Yes, when permanents are set aside they are put in the removed from game zone and then they do return to play. Appropriate leaves play and comes into play abilities will trigger.
Q: My Krovikan Vampire kills Opal Caryatid in combat. What comes back? Do I get a) a 2/2 Caryatid creature or b) the enchantment (because it's not a creature once it hits the graveyard)?
A: You will get an Opal Caryatid enchantment. This is because when a card goes from one zone to another it is treated like an entirely new object and has no connection to any effect that were applied to it in a previous zone. The one exception are effects that specifically look for this card in a different zone.
Q: When I activate Door to Nothingness, will its affect of my opponent stay? So if my opponent has Platinum Angel in play when I activate it, and the following turn I get rid of the Angel, will my opponent lose the game or will nothing happen?
A: Door to Nothingness' effect only causes your opponent to lose the game when that ability resolves. If he has a Platinum Angel in play at that point he will not lose the game. Causing the Platinum Angel to leave play after Door to nothingness' ability has resolved will not cause him to lose the game.
Q: If I play Shahrazad and we start a new game, and for some reason it would be beneficial for both of us to concede the subgame of magic and continue play, does any one player have priority over who can concede first and can you respond to the other person conceding by conceding yourself
A: Whoever chooses to concede first will concede the game. Concession does not use the stack, so whoever states it first wins, umm...I mean loses the subgame.
