Rules Tip of the Day: A spell or ability is only countered on resolution if all of its targets are illegal when it resolves. If at least one target is legal at that point, then the spell will resolve and do as much as possible.
Q: I have Erayo, Soratami Ascendant in play and play Sakashima, The Imposter
choosing Erayo. what happens after this turn's fourth spell?
A: When the fourth spell that turn is played both the original Eryao, Soratami Ascendent and the copy which is named Sakashima will flip. However because Sakashima does not copy the name of the permanent it copies, the Legend rule is not applied and both of these cards will remain in play. If both of these enchantments are controlled by a single player, then nothing much happens, as both abilities will trigger on the first spell played by an opponent.
Q: If Glacial Ray Spliced with another Glacial Ray will this trigger Michiko Konda, Truth Seeker’s ability twice?
A: Yes. A Glacial Ray with another Glacial Ray spliced onto it is a single source, but it deals damage twice. Because of this Michiko's ability will trigger twice, assuming that both parts of the Glacial Ray target the controller of Michiko.
Q: Can I return Eiganjo Free-Riders to my hand when its own triggered ability resovles?
A: Yes, that triggered ability only specifies that you return a white creature to your hand, and the Eiganjo Free-Riders themselves qualify.
Q: What happens when you target a Glasskite with Toils of Night and Day? Is the whole spell countered or will the second part of Toils tap the Glasskite?
A: First of all you cannot target the same permanent with Toils of Night and Day twice because the second portion of Toils of Night and Day specifically states that it affects 'another target permanent.' And even if you could target the Glasskite twice, if this is the first spell or ability to target the Glasskite the entire spell is countered.
Q: In what order do creatures go to the graveyard when they die at the same time? For example, when Ryusei, the Falling Star blocks a Samurai equipped with Oathkeeper and they kill each other. Does the Samurai come back into play before Ryusei's 5 damage sweeps the board?
A: Both of these permanents will go to the graveyard at the same time, when they do both of these triggered abilities will trigger. However their triggered abilities will go on the stack in APNAP (Active Player, Non-Active Player) order. This means that those controlled by the active player go on the stack in whatever order he wants, followed by those controlled by the non-active player in whatever order he wants. Because the Ryusei is blocking in this example, its controller is the non-active player. This means that Ryusei's triggered ability will go on the stack second and it will therefore resolve first. So the Samurai will be returned to play after Ryusei's ability has resolved and it will not receive any damage.
Q: I play Veil of Secrecy with Overblaze Spliced on it, targeting the same creature. Will this creature get all the effect when the spell resolves; unblockable, cannot be target, and double the damage? I’m confused because the first part will be "cannot be target of spell/effect" effect will be applied first.
A: The fact that a permanent is untargetable only matters when a targeted spell is played and just before it resolves. Because this Veil of Secrecy is in the middle of resolving, the second portion of it that also targets the creature will still resolve as normal. Then for the remainder of this turn when this creature deals damage, it will deal twice that amount instead.
Q: Player A has used Mindslaver to control Player B’s turn. During that turn, Player A has Player B sacrifice his Wooded Foothills to activate its ability. If Player B has Sacred Ground in play, will the Wooded Foothills be returned to play?
A: No. While Player A may be controlling the decisions of Player B, he is not the controller of the ability that causes this land to go to the graveyard. That ability is still controlled by Player B, even though Player A is making the decision to have Player B use the ability.
Q: At the beginning of my upkeep, there are no enchantments on Hakim, Loreweaver and there are two enchant creature cards in my graveyard. Can I activate his "enchant creature recovering" ability, then before it resolves, activate it again, getting both enchantments?
A: Yes, the restriction on when you can play this ability does not affect how the ability resolves. All that matters is that Hakim is not enchanted when the ability is played.
