Rules Tip of the Day: Some triggered abilities allow for the payment of mana when they resolves. Unless specified, you can only pay the given costs just once. In other words you can not pay this cost multiple times in order to get the effect multiple times.
Q: If my opponent attacks with a creature that has Kusari-Gama and I block with an unimportant creature, Kusari-Gama would deal that much damage to my other creatures, but would it deal damage to a creature that can't be targeted by spells or abilities?
A: Yes, Kusari-Gama's triggered ability does not target, it will deal damage to a creature that cannot be targeted.
Q: Does the naming event of Pithing Needle use the stack? Let's say one had Engineered Explosives on the table set on one. The opponent plays Pithing Needle. Is there a window to destroy the Pithing Needle with the Engineered Explosives assuming that the controller of the Pithing Needle intends to name Engineered Explosives? I think I'm out of luck on this one by 410.10e (i.e., the word "as" implies static effect not using the stack), but I wanted to check.
A: You are correct, the name of a card is chosen as Pithing Needle resolves and enters play. This does not use the stack separately, it is part of what happens when the Pithing Needle comes into play by any means.
Q: Kuon, Ogre Ascendant's flip requirement says that if three or more creatures should go into the graveyard, Kuon, Ogre Ascendant's flip ability activates. What if Kuon, Ogre Ascendant was to be included with the two other creatures put into the graveyard? Would Kuon's Essence still be put into play or would it go with Kuon, Ogre Ascendant to the graveyard?
A: It will still be in the graveyard. That ability will not trigger unless it is in play at the end of turn and three creatures have gone to the graveyard that turn. If Kuon is one of those three creatures, then the ability cannot trigger.
Q: Can I play Animate Dead and in response play One with Nothing so I have something to animate? Does this also work with Reanimate?
A: That works with Animate Dead. The reason it works with regards to Animate Dead is that you do not target a creature card in your graveyard until Animate Dead comes into play and its coming into play triggered ability goes on the stack. It will not work with some other reanimation spells like Reanimate as you need to choose a target creature card in your graveyard when you play them.
Q: If you activate Ornate Kanzashi during your opponent's turn, can you only play the card if it's an Instant? And if you do it during your turn, if it’s a land, would it count towards your one land a turn?
A: Yes and yes. Ornate Kanzashi's ability does not change when you can play certain cards or increase the number of lands you can play during your turn.
Q: Say there are two players both playing Tooth and Nail. The first player plays it and puts Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker and Plated Slagwurm into play. The following turn, the second player plays Tooth and Nail, searching out and putting into play Kiki-Jiki and Duplicant. Is there ever a point in which the Duplicant can target Kiki-Jiki?
A: No. Immediately after the second Tooth and Nail resolves and the second Kiki-Jiki comes into play, state-based effects will be checked and both Kiki-Jiki will go to the graveyard. Then the Duplicant's coming into play triggered ability will go on the stack, but at that point neither Kiki-Jiki will be in play to target with this ability.
Q: I was looking at Struggle for Sanity and Warped Devotion the other day and I was wondering if when Struggle for Sanity is played with Warped Devotion does my opponent discard his entire hand?
A: No. Permanents are cards or tokens in play Warped Devotion only triggers when a permanent goes to a player's hand. When Struggle for Sanity resolves you set aside the cards in the targeted player's hand, but they are not permanents, so Warped Devotion will not trigger or those cards that are returned to the targeted player’s hand.
Q: What happens if I have Day of the Dragons in play, some dragons are killed, and I play a few more creatures, then I play a Flicker on Day of the Dragons? Will all the old dragons be recreated and the new creatures dragonised just as they would if I had cast Boomerang on Day of the Dragons and then played it again?
A: Yes it can work that way if you want. When Flicker resolves, Day of the Dragons will leave play and then return to play. This will cause its leaves play and it coming into play ability to trigger. Both of these abilities will be waiting to go on the stack when Flicker resolves and as the controller of these abilities you can put them on the stack in any order you want. It does not matter that technically speaking the leaves play ability triggered first, all that matters is that both abilities triggered since the last time someone received priority.
To get the result you described put the coming into play ability on the stack first followed by the leaves play ability. Then all of the creatures removed by the Day of the Dragons the first time it came into play will be returned to play first, and then all creature you control will be removed from the game and replaced by 5/5 Dragons. Keep in mind that you can, if you choose, stack these abilities in the opposite order. However, if you do you will end up with no Dragons, and the creatures that have come into play since the first time you played Day of the Dragons will be removed from the game.
