SCG Daily - A Deck a Day: Fire and Other Stuff

Abe Sargent

By Abe Sargent
09/15/2006

Welcome back to the last of another tryst between me and a random Magic card. It's been a fun blast as we move through all things card, but the decks thus far have had a decided White bias, having selected White cards three out of four days. Today, I'd like a Red, Black or Blue card please.

For those who have short memories, allow me to refresh what the theme is this week. I roll a random expansion set with my ever so trusty orange and purple ten-siders. What set will be rolled today? Set number 39. At first, I didn't think there were thirty-nine sets, but I counted (I don't include Portal or “Un” sets). Set number thirty-nine?

Dissension.

What cool guild card from Dissension will I roll? Number 38. According to my quick counting skills, the 38th card alphabetically in Dissension is….

Demonfire

How. Amazingly. Boring.

I don't want to end my week with Demonfire. Ick. Ah well:

This is a deck heavy on the artifact mana. You win by playing a lot of mana and then X-spelling your opponent to death. Magma Jet and Torrent can be used to sweep the board, and Covetous Dragon can serve as a backup winning condition and flyer killer. The End.

BORING. I don't want to go out like this. So let's roll again.

Set number 6 – Fallen Empires
Card number 181 – Tourach's Chant.

Another hoser? I already had one hoser earlier on Wednesday when I had to build around Justice. Now I have to build around this crappy hoser? It's not even a good hoser against straight Green. I'd rather have a creature or a removal spell than this card. I can't even imagine it being good enough to Magical Hack, like I played with Justice earlier this week.

I give myself one veto a week, so I'm using it now. Go away Tourach's Chant. You are no fun.

Another random set of rolls occurs. What shall I get this time?

Random Set 24 – Apocalypse
Random Card 130 – Wild Research

Now that is an interesting pull. Wild Research is one of my classic Underused Cards of All Time, and I've used it in several decks before, including a previous daily. I'm very comfortable with it. So comfortable, in fact, that I'm happy to build another Wild Research deck.

Okay, let's take a look at this deck.

This deck likes Wild Research a lot. It wants to use the Research to grab an instant and use it. In case the instant goes to the yard, it can try to Madness the instant (Fiery Temper) or to use it with flashback (Flash of Insight) or to stock the yard so that the next one is bigger (Accumulated Knowledge).

All of the cards in the deck can be played quickly if needed. Alternatively, they can be played late and still be useful. It's a nice ability of these cheap cards to be good in all phases of the game.

The deck includes ten creatures. Aquamoeba can be a discard outlet for the eight Madness cards, as well as a solid defender. Possessed Aven (also on the Underused List) will almost always be a 4/4 flyer immune to most Black removal, for just four mana with no disadvantage. Lastly, Fledgling Dragon rounds out the mix by adding another flyer that gets beefy with threshold.

Make sure you don't drop yourself down below threshold if you need to keep it. You might do this with a flashbacked Flash of Insight, so be careful.

I tossed in a little extra burn and card searching with Incinerate and Impulse. These are both cheap, and you can toss them long before the Wild Researching begins.

The best time to use a Wild Research is in response to a spell that you can Madness-counter with a Circular Logic in your hand, just in case you discard it. Even if you are not searching for a Logic but something like an Accumulated Knowledge, if you have a Logic in your hand, then you'll likely want to be able to Madness-counter something.

When it doubt, use the Wild Research to search up Accumulated Knowledges. Once you have a large amount of cards in hand, your searches will be easier. You'll soon get a creature or two out, and you'll be rolling.

Sometimes I like to include a little White mana in a Wild Research deck, to use to get another Research with in case someone tries to Disenchant the first. I didn't in this deck, but it's a trick you can try.

If your group allows Unhinged cards, then Blast from the Past is a card you might want to look at. It has both Madness and Flashback, which gives it two abilities that have synergy with Wild Research.

Well, there we are. It's the end of another happy week of random cards and today brought a pair of decks, although only one real deck. We don't want no Demonfire here, do we?

Until later,

Abe Sargent
