Drafting With Brad! NMS #3

Pack 1 pick 1:

My Pick:

This pack is very boring. All of the best spells are creatures and there are only two removal spells in the pack. Shrine of Burning Rage isn't the most exciting spell; it almost always trades with a guy but takes multiple turns to get there. The only time I like this card is when it is killing my opponent and that rarely happens.

Blinding Souleater is the best card in the pack and can still make it into any color deck.

I don't see anything exciting coming back around the table. Maul Splicer is the for sure guess with Blighted Agent maybe making its way around if nobody wants to be in the blue infect. The problem with tabling a card like that is we would have to move into the archetype before we even get to see if it comes back to profit since this is the only pack with blue infect.

Pack 1 pick 2:

My Pick:

There is not a single card in this pack I am happy about taking second pick. The most powerful card is also the type of card I would rather not take this early since it needs a theme to be good but Dispatch is very powerful in the correct deck.

When I started playing this format I would have taken Gremlin Mine but that card has been very unimpressive every time I have played it. I would rather not touch the card at all.

I'm taking a chance with this pick because nothing else sticks out and I might as well take the card that works best with our first pick. We might find an artifact-based strategy.

Pack 1 pick 3:

My Pick:

This is a very late Pith Driller. Colorless card that works well with both of our first two cards. Easy pick.

Nothing in these packs helps us figure out what people are moving into yet. The signals aren't as strong as cards like Volt Charge or Triumph of the Hordes. We still have to wait and see what happens before we can figure out what people around us are going to do.

Pack 1 pick 4:

My Pick:

There are a ton of Phyrexian mana spells in this pack and we'll take the best of them. Most people will be playing with these kinds of spells because there are so many.

Pack 1 pick 5:

My Pick:

A bad pack proves that we will be taking the aggressive approach this draft. Suture Priest aggro decks can be very powerful if people are not fighting for them and it seems we might be the only person on the table who wants this strategy.

Pack 1 pick 6:

My Pick:

This Blinding Souleater is so late that either everyone but me has an amazing spell or no one knows how to draft at the table. I'm going to assume the former because everyone knows how good this card is. I fear we'll have to kill people early or open bombs.

Pack 1 pick 7:

My Pick:

Great pick to go with our strategy. Best card in the pack.

Pack 1 pick 8:

My Pick:

Inquisitor Exarch is not the most amazing card but it does something nothing else can do in a white deck. Being able to burn an opponent changes lines of play and makes unwinnable games winnable. This card gives a deck reach.

Pack 1 pick 9:

My Pick:

Nothing in this pack scares me except for the Talisman. I don't want to have to play against this card since dealing 20 damage in the early game is difficult enough.

Pack 1 pick 10:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 13:

Pack 1 pick 14:

My Pick:

I really don't understand this one at all. How was Rage Extractor taken over this spell?

Pack 1 pick 15:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 1:

My Pick:

It's sad to have to pass a Phyrexian Crusader but we really need to make sure our spell count is high. Decks like this need every last spell to win and should run fewer lands because of it. Not happy about the pick but then again I knew I would have to make these picks.

Pack two is a rough one for a white deck. You get good removal and some fine creatures but it really only involves one-mana Equipment and two-mana guys. The real gem in this strategy is to hope everyone else doesn't open great cards for their deck. Infect and Red mages love this pack.

Pack 2 pick 2:

My Pick:

Sigh. …

Pack 2 pick 3:

My Pick:

Happy to say we get to take the best card in the pack.

Pack 2 pick 4:

My Pick:

This pack is very bad. We can hate the Steel Sabotage or take a card that might make a cut if we need to add a color. Concussive Bolt is very strong with Slash Panthers but can also make an impression in a white metalcraft deck as well. We even have an Immolating Souleater to go with it.

Pack 2 pick 5:

My Pick:

This is another weak pack and another splash playable. Quicksilver Geyser is insane in an aggressive white deck. Splashing it and Lumengrid Drake can be a great way to take the white decks to a different level of tempo.

Pack 2 pick 6:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 14:

Pack 2 pick 15:

My Pick:

The rest of pack 2 was really just taking cards that could maybe make the cut or cards that were decent against us. This has been a very disappointing draft so far since we really haven't seen too many powerful cards except for off-color ones.

Pack 3 should be better for us but the real question is what we need to get out of the pack. We either have to open an impressive card to splash or that's white; or we can take every aggressive card to beat them down hard and fast.

Pack 3 pick 1:

My Pick:

This is the best kind of deck for a planeswalker like Elspeth Tirel. This is exactly what our deck needs. Not only does this card kill a bomb but we have numerous cards ready to protect her if need be.

Pack 3 pick 2:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 3:

My Pick:

Glint Hawk Idol is stronger in this deck than Glint Hawk. Our curve isn't too great for returning artifacts and the only thing we have that gains value is Pith Driller. There are more cards that interact with Glint Hawk in this set but the safe choice is Idol.

Pack 3 pick 4:

My Pick:

With only one to choose from it becomes much easier.

Pack 3 pick 5:

My Pick:

This is a very interesting pick. Myrsmith fits this deck perfectly. We have a ton of artifacts a decent need for metalcraft and an Elspeth for them to protect. The only problem is Myrsmith is not going to deal much damage in a deck like this. Trigon of Rage gives the deck a different way to play the game which it needs very badly. It is important for a deck to be able to do different things as well as finish a game. Trigon helps with both of these.

Pack 3 pick 6:

My Pick:

This pack sucks and Seize the Initiative is a sideboard card for some matchups.

Pack 3 pick 7:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 8:

My Pick:

Getting the Drake here lets me know that our blue splash is on and it will be very good in the deck.

The deck did not turn out very good. I never really like drafting these decks but this is what we had to work with. The cards that make this deck are Elspeth Tirel Trigon of Rage and Quicksilver Geyser. Without these cards the deck would not stand a chance of winning the draft but these cards are especially powerful in this deck.
