p1p11 Grimeblotter over Torpor Dust - I was setting up for Power of Fire, Presence of Gond, or at the very least, Banishing Knack. This is definitely a close pick though, and I like the Dust a lot.
p2p2 Spectral Procession is close here, but I wanted to try for mono Blue to maximize Flow of Ideas
p3p1 I've never played with Archmage before, but it seemed like it should be pretty awesome.
p3p2 I really wanted to take Banishing Knack here, but I already have 2 Consigns and Aethertow which may make it. The evasion guy seemed like the better choice.
p3p4 I wanted nothing from this pack so I hated Flame Jab. No chance Oona's Grace makes the cut.
Deckbuilding was particularly tough here, as it was hard to decide whether or not to play Green and whether or not the Spell Sypon deserved a maindeck spot. In the end I decided to play the Green rather than some random Blue guys or Shell Skulkin, as Presence of Gond on an untapper should win a game or two if it sticks.
Round 1 I was paired against a Black Red deck. Game 1 we both played some guys and he played two Soul Reaps. After this we were both near empty so I played Presence of Gond on my Stream Hopper with the life totals tied at 10. He didn't have any removal left and eventually I drew some fliers, and the tokens ensured the ground was locked up. For game 2 I sided out the Green even though Presence of Gond won me game 1. It was too much of a liability, and Aerie Ouphes was just a blank. Game 2 he mulliganed on the play, and I assembled some fliers and two Consign to Dreams which was more than enough.
Round 2 was against mono White. Game 1 he played Spectral Procession, but I had Riverfall Mimic with Clout on it and Briarberry Cohort. After this he played Gnarled Effigy, which made my life difficult. We traded some guys until he played Kithkin Spellduster, which totally ruined my plans. I boarded in Flourishing Defenses as he had Blight Sickle and it would also be an answer to Gnarled Effigy. Game 2 I assembled some quick fliers and Noggle Bandit and while he tried to stabilize with Gnarled Effigy again, it was too late. Game 3 seemed to be going well when I got Clout on Noggle Bandit. Then I drew 6 straight lands, and he eventually overwhelmed me simply by drawing more guys. This was pretty disappointing, as I felt this deck was easily good enough for the finals.
Until tomorrow...
