I'm back! My return was delayed by a great deal of work and my first and last Pro Tour of the season. For those interested, I was handed a copy of Gerry Thompson's Faerie deck the morning of the tournament and squeaked into the money despite some fairly embarassing play, including attempting to Champion my Dark Confidant with Mistbind Clique...

I think the first pick of this draft was the hardest. I've yet to see a really good artifact deck, and I wasn't feeling particularly adventurous, so Master of Etherium was out. After that it was the land or Knight, and since the land fits into so many more decks, and may well be the more powerful card, I took it.

I considered taking Bant Charm second, but figured I'd go with the slightly smaller commitment of Naya Battlemage. I've been happy with the Battlemage thus far, but I think the tapper is generally worse than it's been in other formats because a lot of decks don't really care about what creature they're attacking or blocking with, be they Exalted decks or Black Red beatdown.

The next few picks locked me into a Green based deck, with White and Red... I just had to figure out which would be my secondary and tertiary colors.

I probably should've taken Caldera Hellion second in pack two. I figured I wanted more Plains than Mountains because of the Battlemages, which is true, but Caldera Hellion is certainly worth a small sacrifice in consistency, and there was really no reason I couldn't make White the splash at this point.

Round 1 I played a couple not very close games against a Blue Black Red deck. Game 1 I had turn 2 Sigiled Paladin, turn 3 Hissing Iguanar, backed up by a couple Excommunicates then Welkin Guide. Game 2 I kept a shaky hand with a couple of Forests and lots of spells I couldn't cast with them. On turn 3 I drew Angelsong, which I cycled into a Plains. This was pretty convenient because it disguised my Qasali Ambusher pretty well, which he ran his two-drop into. From there I started drawing lands, and it wasn't long before he was being overrun by Mosstodon and Bull Cerodon after Branching Bolt blew up his best two dudes.

I played against a decent Artifact deck round 2. Game 1 I went first and had Steward of Valeron on turn 2, Hissing Iguanar turn 3, and two Qasali Ambushers when he attacked me with his 2/1 Deathtouch flyer (which I didn't block). He conceded when I attacked him for nine on my fourth turn. Game 2 I drew lots of land and died to a couple flyers. Game 3 he mulliganed and didn't draw any Blue mana. My draw wasn't great, but it was good enough to beat someone who only played two spells.

Round 3 I played against another Green Red White deck. I was behind throughout the first game since he attacked for three on turn 3 with Wild Nacatl, then had Drumhunter into Cavern Thoctar. In the end I had a few turns where an Excommunicate, Resounding Roar, or Hissing Iguanar would've won the game, but he took over with Godsire before I could find one of them. Game 2 I had an excellent draw despite missing my second land drop, with Steward, Hissing Iguanar, and Court Archers. I then started drawing some land and finished him off with Welkin Guide taking Mosstodon to the air. I had a pretty good draw in game 3, but unfortunately had no answer to his Flameblast Dragon on turn 5. I probably would've won if I'd drawn one of the Excommunicates to slow the Dragon down.

Until tomorrow...

Rich
