  Pack 1 pick 1:

  My Pick:

Close pick between the 5/5 and Branching Bolt, which are at pretty much the same power level.

  Pack 1 pick 2:

  My Pick:

Panorama could be fine too, as I am very likely playing Naya, but I pick removal spells over Panoramas and Obelisks in the early picks, even when they’re not fantastic.

  My Pick:

I usually don’t draft "big guy" Naya. I have to choose between a card that I have good chance to play (Jungle Weaver) but which won’t shine in the deck, or another (Bone Splinters) that I probably won’t play, but that can be great if I happen to play Jund. I go with the second option.

Nurturer and Ogre were passable choices too.

  Pack 1 pick 9:

  My Pick:

I have mostly Green cards so far, which push me to take the Green card over the Guide even though it is slightly better.

I don’t have enough White to pick Sigiled Paladin.

Now I’m definitely WG, possibly with a Red splash.

I did get my Guide in the end!

  Pack 2 pick 7:

  My Pick:

A card I like playing when I’ve at least two flyers/tramplers. I’ve four right now.

  Pack 2 pick 8:

  My Pick:

I’m not playing any of these, and I’m a lttle scared of Swerve on any of my pump spells.

Simply the best common I could get.

  Pack 3 pick 2:

  My Pick:

It may be worse than Lapse in this archetype, but I’ve so many pump spells that I want lots of guys. Also, Lapse almost always wheels.

  Pack 3 pick 4:

  My Pick:

A very good early drop, pretty much my third Knight of the Skyward Eye.

  Pack 3 pick 5:

I’m now pretty sure I can only lose to pingers or mass removal spells.

ROUND 1: URGB (Limited rating: see below...)

I have a strong opening with turn 1 Nacatl and turn 2 Aven Squire. However, my opponent has played Mountain, Swamp, and Forest, and I have a bad feeling about the possibility he may be holding Branching Bolt, Jund Charm, or Infest. Therefore, with Gleam and two Roars in hand, I’d rather keep my mana opened and not cycle for a Mountain. He thinks at his end of turn, and draws. He then thinks again for one minute, plays an Island, and passes. It feels like Jund Charm or Branching Bolt is coming. He lets me draw, I play a fourth land and attack, he taps three and plays Charm. Fine play, sir... here's nine damage for you. The problem is that I draw three lands in the next four draws. Now on three life, he has the situation quite stabilized with Gharial, Vithian Stinger (active for the first turn), and Tidehollow Strix, while I’ve Kinght of the Skyward Eye and my early two dudes. Once again, for some reason, he passes the turn without killing my flyer during his turn. I draw another Plains and attack with my whole team. He decided to make the worst play every time it mattered. He chose to block my pumpable guy with his 2/1, instead of picking off my flyer before blockers (which would have been better than what was to come). He then pinged, so I played the very Gleam I had never eventually never cycled, and won the game. Amazed by so many misplays, I thought to myself I could definitely only win against players below a rating of 1600, until I checked his rating: 1837. Slightly surprising.

In game 2, once again, he waited for the whole game for me to run into Jund Charm, and once again, he eventually threw the game away. The only time I gave him the opportunity to kill two 2/2s, he had one Stinger and 4 untapped lands on the board. Instead of playing it at end of turn, he decided to deal me one more damage with his 0/1 and play it on his turn. If he had played it at the end of my turn, he wouldn’t have ran into Lapse of Certainty and lost on the next turn.

ROUND 2: Esper aggro (1721)

The first game was pretty close, as we were racing from the very beginning. At some point, we both had four guys, and I needed to draw either a pump spell or a land so I could cast the Welkin Guide I was holding in hand to pump my Rhox Charger and win. Otherwise, he’d kill me on his next attack. And that’s when I drew… Qasali Ambusher. The 2/3 allowed me to barely survive his next attack and win on the next turn, with life totals 2 to -1.

In game 2, he kept a hand with no Islands, and never found one, giving me a turn 6 win.

ROUND 3: ID

My opponent offered me a draw, which I accepted immediately... before regretting it, and realizing I wouldn’t have anything to write about this game.

I’d like to apologize about that. I’ll definitely play next time!

Until Wednesday...

Oli
