Many of you may know Jared Sylva from his column on StarCityGames.com Too Much Information but he's also the Events Manager for StarCityGames.com. Every Open this year has been the result of his savvy management and with 2011 looming Jared's life is about to get even more hectic. Even so I managed to find some time to get his thought on what we have in store for all of our players over the next year.
For Jared the most successful element of 2010 was the proof that the Opens were successful and sustainable. “We've clearly created a Series that players are interested in and want to be a part of.” It's the first time that a Series independent of Wizards has had this type of impact.” The thing Star City most wanted to improve in 2011 was its sphere of influence. “We wanted to expand the geographical reach” Jared said. “More events let us go to more places.” With more places come more opportunities for players to compete which naturally lead to more prizes. “We hope that this helps to fill the hole between PTQs and Grand Prix. We want them to be exciting events that are worth traveling to!”
The Opens will also now be offering a significant Limited portion on Sundays—two Draft Opens. The Draft Opens presented both an opportunity and a challenge for Jared. “As a Limited player myself I'm really excited that draft is getting attention on this scale. However the logistics of any sealed event are significantly more challenging than Constructed events. Preparing the product running drafts and making sure that players have confidence in the event are all tough.”
Organizing the staff for a weekend of this magnitude was no easy feat. In order to handle the load of three major Constructed tournaments in addition to our Draft Opens and side events Jared has recruited a healthy roster of judges that will be keeping order all weekend long. “We have at this event one level 5 one level 4 six level 3s seventeen level 2s and twelve level 1s” Jared said. Most Opens tend to serve as a training ground for the zebras as well. “We also have four candidates who will be working with us and then testing for level 1. During the 2010 season we certified eighteen judges for level 1 and six judges for level 2!”
The Player's Club has been the biggest buzz of the season and promises to be a major force in 2011. “I'm excited that we're giving people the opportunity to benefit from lots of our events. It's just more reason to come out and play!” Speaking of which Jared was happy to share some great news about the 2011 schedule. “The formerly TBD Open slated for March 5-6 has been locked in for Edison New Jersey.” Book those tickets now everyone—the Open is heading north come spring!
