Draft Open #2 Champion Joseph Price
Joseph Price won our second Draft Open as the Legacy tournament wound to a close scooping a cool pot and the Open points that come with it. Along the way he drafted two distinctly different archetypes en route to a 6-0 victory. “In the first I drafted Poison and went 3-0 with it. I had triple Plague Stinger solid removal Skinrender Slice in Twain and Grasp in Darkness.” The deck sounded pretty insane to be honest. “Two of my matches were 2-0s—the first and the third. My second match that guy had probably the best deck at the table” Joseph admitted. “He was RG dinosaurs and he took me to 3 games.”
Joseph switched gears completely in the Top 8 abandoning the Infect strategy for flying creatures. “In the Top 8 I played R/U” Joseph said. “Going in I thought it was a train-wreck draft. Turned out that the pool was really weak so everyone had weak decks!” Joseph adapted well to the lacking card quality playing for synergy. “I had no real curve and wound up having to start Screeching Silclaw just to have a guy. I opted for that one over Oxida Daredevil because I had double Barbed Battlegear.” If he could survive early onslaughts then Joseph's deck actually had a lot of potential going long. “I had a bunch of high-end guys—Sky-Eel Schools and Darkslick Drake.”
“One of the matches I won was off the Volition Reins I had” he said. “Games 1 and 2 I Reins'd the True Conviction he had. In the first he just tapped out and I got him with the fliers after taking it.” History repeated itself shortly after. “In the second game we stalemated until I hit Battlegear and Bloodshot Trainee to keep him off guys while I drew the Volition Reins to end the game. That was in the semifinals!”
The final wasn't much of an affair for Joseph after that match. “I won 2-0. Game 1 was kind of one-sided while game 2 came down to just topdecks. He had Golem Artisan and was jumping a Vector Asp and pumping it. I had a Sky-Eel School and a Darksteel Sentinel and couldn't get through his Alpha Tyrannaxes” Joseph said. “So I just drew the Volition Reins and stole his Golem Artisan.” Sounds simple enough to me.
Congratulations to Joseph Price our second Draft Open Champion!
