The Magic Show #56 — Drafting With Evan
Hello everybody, today’s show focuses on an 8-4 draft I played in the other day, come along with me as I guide you through all 45 picks and subsequent deckbuildling. I also include the live recaps of the matches and my Invitational Bid Video. Woohoo!
The Invitational Bid Video
Let’s face it, voting for yours truly is definitely the most important thing you could do as a viewer of the ‘Show. Do you like The Magic Show? You do you want coverage of the event like no other player can bring? By all means, if you think another writer deserves it I won’t hold it against you, but just remember who brought you the video format you know and love and who can bring the real, video-driven “story" told only the way I can.
So here for your viewing pleasure is five minutes of fun (Music — “Turtles Have Short Legs" by The Can):
Love the Show? Then let’s go to Germany everybody. I’d have to go get a passport and everything.
Drafting With Evan
Okay guys, here’s three videos split between drafting and deckbuilding and games 1 and 2 of round 1. Why are there only two games? Well, that’s what I’m hoping to find out. While I’ve went 3-0 in 8-4s before, this one wasn’t quite so fortunate.
Draft + Deckbuilding (20 min):
Game 1 (via Replay due to technical issues) (6 min):
Sideboarding + Game 2 (6 min):
So while I say in retrospect that G/R was the way to go, I believe I may have been in error there.
Why? Because the White was flowing pretty heavily (Castle Raptors 3rd, Knight of the Holy Nimbus, and the multiple Aven Riftwatcher that came my way in Planar Chaos), as well as a few play mistakes such as not suspending the Shivan Meteor ASAP as well as playing the right lands in the right order Game 2 so my Basalt Gargoyle didn’t get killed by the Flowstone Embrace.
I also probably should have taken the Intet, as it would’ve been the only real bomb in the deck.
That said, I’m all open for suggestions and comments, of course.
Special Correspondent Content
Big thanks to my buddy E McKenzie for providing the following, a deck tech article on his Block Blink Deck (7 min):
For those who can’t view the video, here’s the deck he recommends:

4 Calciderm
4 Epochrasite
4 Maelstrom Djinn
3 Venser, Shaper Savant
3 Seht’s Tiger
3 Vesuvan Shapeshifter
4 Momentary Blink
4 Ancestral Vision
3 Temporal Isolation
4 Nimbus Maze
6 Island
4 Plains
2 Flagstones of Trokair
Sideboard
1 Temporal Isolation
4 Porphyry Nodes
4 Pull From Eternity
4 Aven Riftwatcher
2 Brine Elemental
I hope that’s enough content for you. Thanks for watching everybody, and remember, vote for the Magic Show! Let’s get the first ever video coverage of the Invitational?
Did I mention you guys were going to help me pick the card I plan on submitting? Because you totally will.
Thanks, and as always, until next time, this is Evan Erwin, tapping the cards so you don’t have to.
