Thank You, Brian David-Marshall! - Utah State Championships *1st Place*
by Aaron Muranaka, originally published on 2003-11-06
Even though I liked the idea of a land destruction deck, I gave up on the mono-red version and didn't really have a deck that I wanted to play for States. Then, the Wednesday before States, Brian David-Marshall posted a deck on Magicthegathering.com that I thought just might have potential. As it turns out... It did.

The Results Of MTGGrudgeMatch
Two weeks ago, a 10K event was held in Philadelphia, featuring the Innistrad Standard. The results of that tournament (as well as the top finishing decklists) are brought to you by Pro Tour Historian and Coverage Reporter, Brian David-Marshall!

D is for Dogpile
The incomparable BDM returns with the fourth in his alphabetical journey through Magic's finer strategies. Today, instead of bringing play scenarios to the table, he warns us of the dangers in our card evaluation methods. When all is said and done, who's to say that any card is good or bad?

Brian David-Marshall - 2006-04-12
Flores, Finkel, Osyp... Play Against the Best!
This weekend, in New York City, the Top8Magic crew will be hosting a book signing at Neutral Ground to give people a chance to buy Mike's book in person, meet the author, the staff, and some of the famous names that populate the pages of Mike's massive tome. Once through the doors you will have the opportunity to run your Standard-legal deck through a gauntlet of some of Mike's past Standard creations, manned by some of the world's greatest players...

Brian David-Marshall - 2006-04-06
C is for Combat
After a brief hiatus, BDM is back with the third of his alphabetized article series. More Limited plays dissected and discussed... this time, they revolve around the cornerstone of our forty-card format: attacking with monsters. An article full of invaluable advice, that will increase your win percentage in both Magic and poker combined!

Brian David-Marshall - 2006-03-22
B is for Beautiful: Overvaluing Your Cards
In the second installment of his new column, BDM discusses the roles we assign our cards. Should we trade that Guildmage for a lowly Sell-Sword Brute? With examinations of real match decisions, this thoughtful article will definitely improve your logic in the Limited game.

Brian David-Marshall - 2006-03-15
A is for Aggressive
In the first of what will be a regular column, BDM investigates the way people play Magic. By analysing plays on various turns of a given game, he highlights how seemingly inconsequential choices can impact on the game state as a whole. A fine read, and an excellent start to what promises to be a fantastic series. Brian, it's great to have you back.

This One Goes to Nine...
As the Extended Season continues, new decks continue to poor out of the woodwork like unstoppable cockroaches, determined to make the life of metagaming PTQ players utterly impossible. Thankfully Brian David-Marshall is here to shine a light on things and this week he has a doozy of a new crop, including a Red Deck that runs Isochron Scepter, and infinite mana combo with Snap and Eternal Witness, and an Academy Rector deck good enough to win a slot on the Pro Tour. If you are playing Extended this season or even if you just love seeing cool new decks, you must read this article.

Brian David-Marshall - 2005-02-18
The (Decks to) Beat Goes On
You are playing in a PTQ this Saturday. It is the first round and you have no idea what anyone is playing. You are playing...let’s say Rock (Swords optional) and your opponent is going first. Your hand has plays for the first three turns of the game and the mana to make them so you keep as did the player across from you. Your opponent leads the game off with a Seat of the Synod and no play.

You draw your card for the turn and contemplate the Cabal Therapy in your hand. What do you name?

10 Extended Decks in 1 Day: The Thirteenth Step
Wrapping up our Extended Mega-Event is none other than Brian David-Marshall. Instead of covering Solitary Confinement as he originally planned, today BDM brings you a staggering array of potential rogue decks that are already making their impact on this Extended season. If you are looking for something off the beaten path (and in some cases way off) to play this weekend, or maybe just trying to survey some of the randomness you might see at your local PTQ, then you must read this article.

The Bell or Hunt Dilemma: A Tribe Called Flesh
Somewhere within Tim Aten's review of Grand Prix: Chicago team names on Monday was a legitimate article discussing the merits of Kami of the Hunt vs. Order of the Sacred Bell. Today the man who chose Glacial Ray over Kokusho, the Evening Star flips that bad boy around and tells you why the hunky monks are exactly the men you want to be choosing when you're at the draft table.

The Champions Laser or Dragon Dilemma: Laser!
Before writing this series, I decided to ask an expert for his advice on how to sail the often treacherous seas of the dilemmas. Ken's advice to me was very simple, although difficult to follow: "Don't take the controversial position. You will never live it down." Great!

Hi! My name is Brian David-Marshall and I take Glacial Ray over Kokusho, the Evening Star.

The 2004 Championship Deck Challenge: The Sea Turtles Strike Back
In preparation for this week's article, BDM actually played his Splicachron Scepter in a real tournament with somewhat disastrous results. If you haven't been following the themes of the articles this week, the gist of it is that U/W is definitely not one of the tier 1 decks for the States metagame, and Brian David-Marshall is back on StarCityGames.com to tell you why.

The Ted Knutson Dilemma: Bag!
Paper or plastic? The answer to that age old question is not unlike this dilemma. It is doesn't matter which way you choose to go-you still end up with a bag.

What's The Build? Team Sealed
To practice building for this weekend, Mike and I dove into a card pool and built three decks separately from each other. We were both stunned by the depth of the card pool and found it extraordinarily difficult to make cuts within a color. Our solutions were very different, and I think we both understood the approach the other player was taking. I have put all of the cards in alphabetical order by color regardless of set - what would your team do with these cards?

The Easiest Pro Tour You'll Ever Qualify For
Since you play against teams with the same record as you in a Swiss tournament, it is likely that you will have similar ratings to your opponents all day long. A 5-0 record can yield 80 points at a 32K event. Even a 3-0 at a measly 16K event is worth 24 points. If you can string together those two events, you are halfway to being qualified for the next Pro Tour.

Focus On Tight Sight
A couple of months ago, I got an excited e-mail from Neutral Ground regular Elden Lee. He had stumbled upon an exciting new deck on Magic Online that a Japanese player had beaten him with. I have no idea who this player was - but as far as I know, he is the originator of the deck that came to be known as Tight Sight. We tested it, and here's what we found out.

Squeezing "Oomph" Out Of Your Deck: Did I Build This Right?
I know there has been a lot of talk about U/R losing a lot of its luster with one less pack of Lavamancer's Skills; I think the combination is still viable, but the archetype has changed. I have had some success pairing the Mistform creatures with the blue and red Slivers, like Blade Sliver and Shifting Sliver. 3/1 Mistform Dreamers and 4/1 Mistform Seaswifts present your opponent with a small window of time to find their answers.

You Lika The Juice?- Eldrazi Dragon Highlander
by Bennie Smith, originally published on 2010-04-23
The StarCityGames.com Open Series returns to Atlanta! Friday, April 23rd-I started my Saturday at the Richmond Convention Center ready to earn some Rise of the Eldrazi packs by helping administer the prerelease. I ended the day at a hotel bar playing EDH with Magic Historian Brian David-Marshall and WotC R&D and Magic Hall of Famer Mike Turian. Yeah, it was a pretty awesome day!

Feature Article - Aggro Flow in the New Extended
by Andre Coimbra, originally published on 2007-11-05
Read Feature Articles every Monday... at StarCityGames.com! In preparation for Pro Tour: Valencia, Portugal’s Andre Coimbra joined forces with Steve Sadin, Mike Flores, Brian David-Marshall, and more. Together, they looked to demolish the blossoming metagame with a mixture of strategies both old and new. In his first article for StarCityGames.com, Andre shares the development of the deck he played at the PT, updates it for Lorwyn, and reveals his sideboarding strategies. Welcome aboard Andre!

The Beautiful Struggle - The Mockvitational
by Mark Young, originally published on 2007-10-04
Read Mark Young every Thursday... at StarCityGames.com! Brian David-Marshall caught up to me on Magic Online about a month ago and sent me a message: "How would you like to come up to NYC on October 6 to play in the top8magic Mockvitational?" Competitors? Lebedowicz, Chapin, and other luminaries will be turning out. Formats? Hey, I’ve always wanted to build my own block. Prizes? Amongst this crowd, what better prize could there possibly be than... bragging rights.

Boros Deck Wins in Extended - Rocking the Mock Tournament
by Paul Jordan, originally published on 2007-01-04
Last weekend, Brian David-Marshall ran a small Extended mock tournament at Neutral Ground, inviting some of Magic's great and good to sling the overpowered spells. Paul rocked up with Boros Deck Wins, and attempted to fathom Frank Karsten's sideboard plans for matchups across the board. While he didn't win the whole thing, his thoughs on the deck are very interesting... invaluable for those running the Little Red (and White) Men at their coming PTQ.

Magical Hack: What In The Worlds?
by Sean McKeown, originally published on 2006-12-01
Read Sean McKeown... every Friday at
StarCityGames.com! A list of archetypes was thankfully made available to us via Brian David-Marshall’s time-shifted “Swimming with Sharks” article - which, when stacked up next to the Round 6 Standings from Worlds, neatly sums up to a list of archetypes matched with the players who played them and the results they had after six rounds of play. This gives us the opportunity to go running with numbers some more, and to learn some very interesting things about the Standard metagame in motion.

Battle Royale 13 - The Incredible Edible Shell Game
by Eli Kaplan, originally published on 2006-12-01
StarCityGames.com - Battle Royale! Two weeks ago, in the recorded casts heading into Grand Prix: New Jersey, Brian David-Marshall couldn't keep himself from showing his love for his newfound creation, Pickles. He didn't give a decklist in the podcasts, but with the key parts of the combo revealed, it was a giddy challenge trying to reconstruct his vision without actually looking. The day those podcasts were released, I went out and started building and testing. Many iterations later, this is what I devised for the Battle Royale.

Norwegian Nationals Report - Introducing Good Form *T8*
by Thomas Gundersen, originally published on 2005-08-26
This is the tournament report that Brian David-Marshall teased on MagictheGathering.com. It contains the decklist for "Good Form", a new deck that went 15-3 in the Standard portion of Norwegian Nats and runs everyone's favorite epic spell: Enduring Ideal.

Discuss: Which Team Will Win Pro Tour Atlanta This Weekend?
A StarCityGames.com Discussion from 2005-03-11

Pro Tour Atlanta is this weekend, and it's a team limited tournament! The first day, each team gets two Champions of Kamigawa Tournament decks and 4 Betrayers of Kamigawa booster packs to build three seperate decks with. Those teams which make day two will compete in a Champions/Champions/Betrayers team Rochester Draft. Brian David-Marshall previewed many of the teams at MagicTheGathering.com on Thursday. Who are you rooting for? Which team will take home the grand prize of $60,000? Will there be any surprise teams showing up at the Pro Tour? Discuss!

10 Extended Decks in 10 Days - The Beautiful Struggle: Storm Riders
by Mark Young, originally published on 2005-02-01
Masashi Oiso piloted a Black version of Mind's Desire to a Top 8 finish at Pro Tour: Columbus, but is that the version that most players will want to run for the PTQ season? Mark Young isn't so sure, and in this comprehensive look at Mind's Desire he examines the pros and the cons of the deck and its variations for PTQ players everywhere.

Mark's article is the second in our full-blown Extended event where the best Constructed writers and deckbuilders in the world - including Mark, Jim Ferraiolo, Brian David-Marshall, Chad Ellis, and Mike Flores among others - give you the inside scoop on the new PTQ format for two whole weeks!

The Sordid History of U/G Threshold
by Mike Flores, originally published on 2005-01-14
Before you get too far into this article, please keep in mind that this is the sordid history of U/G Threshold, rather than a proper one in the vein of Deck Histories and Concepts or some such. Rather than mentioning such actually successful masters of the Mongoose as David Humpherys or Raphael Levy, this article is going to focus on a series of decks designed by yours truly and Brian David-Marshall since Odyssey Block. BDM and I love this deck to what can only be considered an unhealthy degree and if you play it you might too.

Weak Among the Strong: Rob’s Strategy for Qualifying for the Pro Tour, Part 2
by Chad Ellis, originally published on 2004-10-11
Those of you who read Brian David-Marshall's MTG.com article last week probably already know the outcome of this report, but what you don't know is exactly how Chad got there or what he has to say about Rochester drafting Champions of Kamigawa. As a bonus, Chad has also provided all the decklists for the top 8 draft of his PTQ, so you can see exactly how things play out in this new Limited format.
