Rules Tip of the Day: Effects that change the type of a land into a basic land type do not make that land into a basic land. Basic is a supertype, and effects that are applied to subtypes will not affect supertypes. This also applies to lands with one or more basic subtypes—they are also not basic lands.
Q: I have successfully cast Enduring Ideal and by my third turn I have 3 Hondens in play. During next my next upkeep can I stack the epic ability and the Hondens abilities to first search for a shrine then trigger each shrine that I now have in play including the fourth one? Or will just the three current shrines trigger seeing 4 shrines each?
A: As the controller of the upkeep triggered ability of these three Hondens and the Epic delayed triggered ability, you can put the Honden abilities on the stack first and the Epic trigger on the stack last. If you do this, the Epic trigger will resolve first, and you can search for and put a new Honden into play. (The ability of the Shrine that you search for will not trigger; it was not in play at the beginning of your upkeep.) Then, when the other Honden triggered abilities resolve, there will be four shrines in play.
Q: Is it legal to use Coretapper to put charge counters on artifacts that do not say they can acquire them? For example, could I tap Coretapper to put a charge counter on an Energy Chamber, with the idea that later, when I get a Power Conduit in play, I could then move that counter onto something else?
A: Yes. The only targeting restriction that Coretapper's ability has is that you target an artifact. It does not matter if this artifact uses charge counters, you can still put them on it.
Q: I have 3 lands and Phyrexian Altar in play. I cast the Life side of Life / Death and sac the lands to the Altar for WWW. Then I use that mana to play Second Sunrise, bring everything back into play. Should those lands come back into play as untapped, 1/1 creature-lands for the remainder of the turn or should they come back into play as regular, untapped lands?
A: These lands will be returned to play as they normally enter play—as noncreature lands. When a card goes from one zone to another it is treated as an entirely new object, with no connection to its prior existence in play, or to any effects that were applied to it in a previous zone, unless an effect specifically looks for it in the new zone. Second Sunrise specifically refers to cards that have changed zones, so it will return these lands to play. However, when these lands are returned to play, they are treated as new lands and will not have the effect from Life applied to them.
Q: Can both Bladewing the Risen and Rorix Bladewing be on the board at the same time, or do they count as the same legend?
A: They are different cards as they have different names. In order for the state-based effect that removes two legendary permanents in play to be applied both legendary permanents must have the exact same name.
Q: When you name a card for Grim Reminder, does the named card have to be in your deck or can it be a failed search and still work?
A: You do not name a card when Grim Reminder resolves, you simply search for one in your deck without announcing or choosing one. However, because Grim Reminder instructs you to search for a card with a specific quality (nonland) you can fail to find a card when performing the search. If you do, then the rest of the spell will resolve and do nothing.
Q: How would an Awesome Presence attached to a Taunting Elf work? Would that tap out their mana supply? What happens if they can't pay for all their blockers?
A: Due to the Awesome Presence creatures controlled by the defending player will not be able to block this attacking Taunting Elf unless three mana is paid for each blocking creature. Taunting Elf's ability requires creature controlled by the defending player to block if they are able, but it does not require the defending player to make any payments in order to make these creature to block. So if the defending player wants, he can choose to have this attacking Taunting Elf go unblocked or block it with whatever creatures he choose to pay three mana for them to block.
Q: I have in play Blanket of Night and Nightmare. If I have 3 swamps in play with a Nightmare and I play Blanket of Night what is the effect on my Nightmare? I'm of the opinion the swamps double so the power and toughness of my Nightmare also doubles.
A: If the only lands you control are those three swamps, then having Blanket of Night in play will not double the number of swamps you control. The power and toughness of your Nightmare will not change in this example, it will remain a 3/3.
