Rules Tip of the Day: When changing the target of a spell or ability, you must choose a new legal target.
Q: What would happen if a player played Doomsday as the last card in his hand, with no cards in his graveyard, and in response the opponent played Shadow of Doubt?
A: Because this player is unable to search his library, and his graveyard is empty, he will not be able to search for anything. However, he will still have to remove all cards in his library from the game and lose half of his life, rounded up. Shadow of Doubt only prevents this player from searching his library; it does not affect any other portion of the effect. The fact that this player's hand is now empty is not relevant, other than that he has very few options now, and will lose the game the next time he has to draw.
Q: If my opponent sacrifices Kagemaro, First to Suffer and sweeps the board, does the -X/-X apply to any further creatures that come into play later in the turn? For example: After my opponent sweeps the board and the ability of Kagemaro resolves, I bring a Loxodon Heirarch into play. Does he get the -X/-X?
A: No. The continuous effect from Kagamaro's ability only applies to creatures that are in play when Kagemaro's ability resolves. Creatures that come into play after this ability resolves will be unaffected.
Q: I attack with Dimir Cutpurse with no blockers on the field. My opponent creates a creature with Vitu-Ghazi, the City Tree and in response, I Last Gasp the token. He says that I can't, because no one has priority until he declares blockers. Is he right, and the Cutpurse will get blocked, or am I right, and the Cutpurse will go through?
A: You are correct. In order to block with this token creature, he needs to make it in the declaration of attackers step, before he declares blockers. After this token comes into play both players will receive priority before the declaration of blockers. It is at this time that you can remove this token from play so it is unable to block.
Q: Can you play a Copy Enchantment on an untapped permanent as a copy of Dream Leash? It isn't actually a Dream Leash until it comes into play, so if it's a Copy Enchantment when it's played, it should work, shouldn't it?
A: Yes, that work. The restriction on Dream Leash only applies when you play a Dream Leash spell. When you play Copy Enchantment, you do not target anything; you simply choose an enchantment in play to copy as the Copy Enchantment spell resolves. If you choose Dream Leash you will then be able to attach this Copy Enchantment to a permanent in play. As you are not playing this Dream Leash and this Copy is not targeting anything, you can attach it to an untapped permanent.
Q: Hammerfist Giant's text says "deals 4 damage to each creature without flying and to each player." Does this mean it also deals 4 damage to itself?
A: Yes, it is a creature in play to it will deal 4 damage to itself.
Q: If a creature with Bushido is blocking or being blocked by a creature with Double Strike would it be pumped twice because the creature has double strike?
A: No. Bushido triggers when a creature blocks or becomes blocked. It has nothing to do with the number of combat damage steps in a combat phase.
Q: Can I use Unearth to get my Avatar of Woe from the graveyard when there are 10 or more cards in all graveyards, as it cost is reduced by six?
A: No, that does not work. Avatar of Woe's ability lowers the cost to play it when the appropriate condition is met. It does not affect the converted mana cost of this card. Because the converted mana cost of Avatar of Woe is always 8, you can not target it with Unearth.
Q: I am playing in a timed, single-elimination match against an opponent. Within the course of the first game, my opponent plays a card that causes a subgame to be played. Within this subgame, time is called in the round and all five additional turns are taken. Which life total (main game, subgame) is used to determine the winner?
A: All that matters are the life totals in the main game. The life totals in the subgame will not affect the outcome of the game. If the subgame ends within the five turns, then you will return back to the main game, but even if you do not the winner of this game will be determined by whoever has the higher life total in the main game.
