Rules Tip of the Day: You can use any version of a card when playing in a constructed event as long as a version of that card is printed in a legal set. You are not required to track down and play with the most recently printed version. Keep in mind that each card is treated as if it has the current Oracle text, and this only applies to white- or black-bordered cards with regular Magic card backs.
Q: Are copies from the Eye of the Storm played at the speed of the cards they copy? Essentially, how are sorceries handled?
A: The type of the spells removed by Eye of the Storm are basically irrelevant. When Eye of the Storm's ability resolves, you can play copies of the removed cards in any order; you are not prevented from playing copies of sorceries, even though the stack is not empty.
Q: Dogpile deals damage equal to the number of attacking creatures I control, but if one of my creatures were to be killed/removed in response, does that decrease the damage done by Dogpile? For example, I attack with three creatures and an opponent plays Swords to Plowshares on one of them. Does Dogpile resolve for two damage, or still three?
A: It will only deal two points of damage. The amount of damage dealt by Dogpile is determined when Dogpile resolves. It does not matter how many of your creatures were attacking when Dogpile was played.
Q: Let's say that my library is all used up, due to Brain Freeze. Instead of drawing, could I use Life from the Loam without having cards to Dredge?
A: No, that does not work. You cannot Dredge a card if your library is empty, as you will be unable to put the necessary cards from the top of your library into your graveyard. If you can find some other way to replace this draw, you will not lose the game, but you cannot use a Dredge ability in this example.
Q: I have a Sunforger attached to a creature. I pay RW, unattach it from the creature, and then search for an instant and play it. Can the spell I am playing be countered by a counter such as Hinder or Rewind?
A: Yes, because you are still playing this spell. It will use the stack; it can be responded to; and it can be targeted by spells and abilities; so it can be countered.
Q: If I have Possessed Portal in play, and I play Sunbeam Spellbomb, can I draw a card with it, or would Portal just cause me to skip the draw again?
A: Possessed Portal will cause you to skip drawing a card at any time while it is in play, not just your normal card draw for the turn.
Q: If I had Horobi, Death's Wail and Jade Monolith out and I used the Monolith to have it so the next time creature X damages creature Y, the damage will be redirected to me, would both creatures die, or would it just be one of the two?
A: Jade Monolith's ability only has one target, which is creature Y in your example. When the ability resolves, you choose a source of damage. Choosing this source does not target it. In your situation, Horobi's ability will only trigger once: when you choose creature Y as the target of Jade Monolith's ability.
Q: I have a question concerning Shahrazad and a player conceding in the subgame. According to the Offical rulings, a subgame is part of the main game, so am I right in assuming that if my opponent concedes in a subgame, he would also concede the main game, since they are in effect part of the same game?
A: That is incorrect; if a player concedes the subgame, they are conceding the subgame only. The only effect on the main game is that this player will now lose half of his life total in that game, because he lost the subgame.
Q: I'm tapped out and have a Wild Mongrel in play. My opponent plays Cabal Therapy and immediately calls "Arrogant Wurm". If I respond to the Cabal Therapy by discarding the Arrogant Wurm in my hand to my Wild Mongrel to make it +1/+1 and change its color, is my opponent then allowed to call something else on resolution of his Cabal Therapy?
A: It depends on the circumstances, but in most likely not. By choosing the card when he announced the spell he is probably making a sloppy play. I find that players that choose a card on announcement often misunderstand how Cabal Therapy works. However, because of the situation described here and the fact that you responded to the Therapy, it is unfair for him to be allowed to gain an advantage due to this sloppy play. From your description, the intent of your opponent is obvious so we'll stick with that intent. Keep in mind that if I felt that your opponent did know how Cabal Therapy worked and stated "Arrogant Wurm" in order to gain an unfair advantage, then he is cheating and would be DQed.
[I'm not sure I agree completely with Chris here; I think that more often than not I'd resolve things properly: give each player priority, then resolve Therapy and have the card named then. There would also likely be a warning issued. There are circumstances in which I'd hold the player to the named card, and we are in complete agreement that a player who plays cards wrong on purpose is likely to end up in deep trouble. Feel free to discuss this one in the forums. -Seamus]
