Rules Tip of the Day: If there are multiple instances of the same triggered ability, each will trigger when the appropriate condition is met. These triggered abilities will then resolve separately.
Q: Can a card removed from the game with Shared Fate be Suspended? I initially thought no, but when I read the reminder text on Suspend, it seems really tricky.
A: No. Cards with Suspend can only be Suspended when they are in a player's hand . You cannot Suspend a card form the removed from game zone, graveyard, or library, even if you could play the Suspend card from one of these zones. This is similar to the fact that you cannot discard a card that is not in your hand, even if you can play a card that is not in your hand.
Q: If my opponent has an Ith, High Arcanist out in play, and I attack with Akroma, Angel of Wrath, and he taps the Ith, does the Akroma still deal damage, even though it has vigilance?
A: No. When Ith, High Arcanist's ability resolves, Akroma will not be untapped, but all combat damage that she would deal will be prevented. The word 'untap' is an instruction to untap the targeted attacking creature. If this creature is not tapped, then this instruction is ignored but the rest of the effect will be applied.
Q: Can Seething Song and similar mana-producing spells be Counterspelled by your opponent before you can use the mana? I want to cast Dragonstorm, and I have 3 land in play. My intention is to string three Seething Songs together. Could my opponent try to Counterspell one of my Seething Songs, thereby keeping me from having enough mana to cast Dragonstorm?
A: Yes, your opponent can counter one of these Seething Songs. Spells like Seething Song that add mana to your mana pool use the stack just like any other spell. These spells are not mana abilities, so they can be countered when they are on the stack waiting to resolve.
Q: Does Grand Arbiter Augustin IV's ability to reduce generic costs of blue spells interact with Mystical Teaching's Flashback cost?
A: Yes. Mystical Teachings is a blue spell. The ability of Grand Arbiter Agustin IV will lower the cost of this spell any time it is played; either normally or via its Flashback cost. With the Grand Arbiter in play, Mystical Teachings will cost 2U when played from your hand, and it would cost 4B to play it via Flashback.
Q: Does Hypergenesis work with Cloudstone Curio? That is, when you resolve Hypergenesis, play a creature, your opponent plays whatever, and you play a second creature, can you then return that creature to your hand to play it again for free?
A: No. Cloudstone Curio's ability will trigger during the resolution of Hypergenesis, but any instances of the trigger will wait until Hypergenesis has completely resolved before going on the stack. So you can return a creature that you put into play when Hypergenesis resolved; however, you won't be able to return it to play again for free.
Q: I have Psionic Sliver, Might Sliver, and Essence Sliver in play. Theoretically speaking, if I were to tap one of them and have it deal two damage and then three damage, I would gain five life each time, thanks to the Essence Sliver, correct?
A: You are correct. When the ability granted by Psionic Sliver resolves, the Sliver with the ability deals a total of five points of damage: two to the targeted creature or player, and three to itself. When Essence Sliver's ability resolves you will end up gaining five life.
Q: If I play a Vesuva and use it to copy a basic land type that I don't have in play—say, a Mountain—and then play a Coalition Victory, will the Vesuva/Mountain count towards meeting the win condition?
A: Yes. This Vesuva is a Mountain and Coalition Victory's effect will count it as one when it resolves.
Q: If I cast Sudden Shock on a River Boa and a regeneration shield has not been created before now, will the Boa be able to regenerate before it dies?
A: No, your opponent will not be able to activate the regeneration ability, due to the Split Second ability of Sudden Shock.
Q: Will a creature with first strike deal its damage first when Arena's ability resolves, or do both creatures deal damage at the same time?
A: Whether or not a creature has first or double strike will not affect what happens when Arena's ability resolves. First strike only affects what happens in the combat phase, not what happens when a spell or ability resolves. Arena's effect may make two creatures deal damage to each other, but this is not combat (at least, according to the rules). So when Arena's ability resolves, these two creatures will deal damage to each other at the same time.
Q: If a creature of mine is Haunted by a Belfry Spirit and later gains protection from White, would the Haunt mechanic fall off of the creature in a way that's similar to an enchantment or equipment, or would it not effect the Haunt mechanic?
A: No. Once the Haunt ability has resolved and the targeted creature has been Haunted, giving this Haunted creature an appropriate protection ability will not end the Haunt effect.
