Rules Tip of the Day: If the creature that damage would be redirected to is not in play when damage would be dealt, then the damage will not be redirected, and will be dealt as normal.
Q: I have Flickering Spirit in play, and I play Obliterate. Can I use Flickering Spirit's ability to save it from Obliterate?
A: No. Flickering Spirit's ability will remove it from play and then immediately return it to play. It will be in play when Obliterate resolves, so it will be destroyed.
Q: My sideboard is face down, so I cannot use Pull From Eternity to get a card from there into my yard, correct?
A: You cannot target a card in your sideboard at all, but not because the cards are face down. Cards in your sideboard are not in the game at all, so they cannot be in the removed from game zone.
Q: How does Locket of Yesterdays work on spells like Leap of Flame? Can I choose which color to pay or not, or is it unaffected, because the artifact allows me to save on uncolored mana costs?
A: Locket of Yesterdays can only lower the cost of a spell by colorless mana; it cannot allow you to avoid paying the necessary colored mana. So a Locket of Yesterday's can't lower the cost to play a Leap of Flame.
Q: While Hypergenesis is resolving, can a player pay a Morph cost to turn a Morph face up? It is a static ability that can be activated any time they pay the necessary cost. Is this correct?
A: A Morph cost cannot be paid at just any time; it can only be paid when a player has priority. And while Hypergenesis is resolving no player has priority, so a Morph cost cannot be paid to turn a face-down creature face up. The player will have to wait until after Hypergenesis has finished resolving and he receives priority to pay the Morph cost.
Q: I have a Court Hussar out and a face-down Willbender. My opponent casts Bogardan Hellkite, targeting both Court Hussar for three damage and the morph for two. I flip Willbender. What exactly are my options?
A: Your only option is to watch these two creatures receive lethal damage and go to the graveyard. Because your opponent chose to target both the Court Hussar and the face-down Willbender, the Bogardan Hellkite's ability is not an ability with a single target. This means that you can not change this ability at all with Willbender's ability.
Q: With Shape of the Wiitigo, if the enchantment leaves play, do all the counters fall off of the enchanted creature? If they do not fall off, then does the trigger still affect the creature?
A: The counters will remain on this creature, and because Shape of the Wiitigo is no longer in play, its ability cannot trigger any more. This means that the number of counters on this creature will remain the same.
Q: I cast Aluren and then play Wirewood Savage. But my opponent plays Disenchant, targeting Aluren. If I respond by playing Cavern Harpy, will I draw a lot of cards by triggering the ability of Wirewood Savage?
A: No. From the description your opponent played Disenchant in response to you playing Wirewood Savage. Aluren may allow you to play creature spells with a converted mana cost of three or less whenever you can play an instant, but these creature spells still use the stack. So you can play Cavern Harpy in response to the Disenchant, but you won't draw any cards, as the Wirewood Savage is not in play yet.
Q: I have Aether Storm in play and a player pays four life to destroy it. If I use Capsize to return it, will the player still lose the life?
A: Yes. The player that activates Aether Storm's ability pays four life when the ability is played. This ability will use the stack and can be responded to. So you can play Capsize to return it to your hand. At this point, your opponent has already paid four life, and it will not be refunded if Aether Storm is not destroyed.
