Rules Tip of the Day: An individual permanent can only have a specific suptype once. Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth will not make a Swamp have the subtype Swamp twice. Similarly, Lim-Dul the Necromancer cannot make a creature a "Zombie Zombie."
Q: Does Tarmogoyf count numbers of types, or just each type? Say there are three artifacts and no other cards in graveyards. Is Tarmogoyf a 3/4 or a 1/2?
A: It only counts card types, not the number of each card type. So at most it will get +1/+1 if there is an artifact card in a graveyrad, regardless of the number of artifact cards in all graveyards.
Q: What happens during combat if a creature (attacker or blocker) changes controllers after damage is assigned?
A: Creatures are removed from combat when they change controllers, but that does not change how combat is assigned or how it will be dealt. Combat damage can be dealt to creature that are no longer in combat, as long as damage was assigned to them. So combat damage will be dealt as assigned, even if a creature changes controllers.
Q: I have Priest of Gix, Recurring Nightmare, Bitter Ordeal and a couple of Dark Rituals in my hand. In play I have two Swamps. Can I create an infinite circle by playing the Priest with a Dark Ritual, then the Nightmare with the mana from the Priest, sacrifice the Priest to Nightmare, put Priest in play and Nightmare in my hand, repeat many times, and play Bitter Ordeal to remove my opponent's whole deck from the game?
A: No, that does not work. When you play a spell or ability you must choose legal targets before you pay any costs. In order to activate the ability of the Recurring Nightmare you must first choose a target creature in your graveyard before you sacrifice a creature to pay the activation cost. However, this combo will work if you can get another Priest of Gix into your graveyard.
Q: I have The Rack in play and my opponent has no cards in hand. If he controls a Dark Confidant, he can trigger the Confidant's ability first before he loses three points of life from The Rack?
A: No. Both The Rack and Dark Confidant's abilities will trigger at the same time when the upkeep step of your opponent begins. When multiple abilities trigger at the same time, they go on the stack in APNAP (Active Player, Non-Active Player) order. This means that those controlled by the active player go on the stack in whatever order he wants, followed by those controlled by the non-active player in whatever order he wants. As you control The Rack's ability, it will go on the stack last and resolve first. So your opponent cannot do what he wants.
Q: I play Ignorant Bliss, and remove my hand from the game. Then I play Wheel of Fate, and I draw seven cards and continue with the turn. At the end of turn, I would return my original hand's cards to my hand and draw a card. Because discarding is part of my end of turn phase, I'm not sure which would happen first, discarding any cards remaining in my hand over 7 or returning the removed cards to my hand. What happens and why?
A: You will return these cards to your hand first, draw a card, and then discard down to seven cards. This is because abilities that trigger at the end of a turn will trigger at the beginning of the end of turn step in the end phase. This is the first step in the end phase. Then, after the end of turn step has ended, you go to the cleanup step. It is in the cleanup step that you discard down to your maximum hand size. Keep in mind that you only discard down to your maximum hand size in the cleanup step of your own turn.
Q: If a Morph is face-down on the stack, and it gets Remanded, does the controller of the Remand get to see what card it was?
A: Yes. Anytime a face-down spell leaves the stack, it is turned face-up as it goes to the zone it is heading for. The only (and obvious) exception is when a face-down spell resolves and this permanent enters play.
Q: Can a Meddling Mage naming Gempalm Incinerator prevent my opponent from Cycling it?
A: No. Meddling Mage's ability prevents the named card from being played. Gempalm Incinerator's ability is an activated ability. Using it is not the same as playing the Incinerator. In order to prevent the Gempalm from being played and from having its activated ability used you'd need something like Voidstone Gargoyle.
Q: If I am in a Two-Headed Giant game and my partner controls a Phyrexian Arena, do we both draw a card, since our life is shared?
A: No. The team will end up losing one life each turn, but only your teammate will draw a card. This ability affects your life total, as you share a life total, and any time your teammate loses life the team does. However, Phyrexian Arena's ability only causes its controller to draw a card.
