Rules Tip of the Day: With the release of Tenth Edition, Phryexian Dreadnought has received errata so that its text is virtually the same as when it was originally printed. When it was printed, triggered abilities did not use the stack and had to be dealt with immediately. However, when triggered abilities were changed in the 6th Edition rules set so they did use the stack, the Dreadnought didn't work as it originally did. To fix this, the Dreadnought was given errata changing its ability into a static ability that generated a replacement effect. Now, as part of the effort to remove power level errata, the Dreadnought has had its original text restored.
Q: I have a face-down Gathan Raiders in play with two cards in hand and my opponent casts Sudden Death targeting the Raiders. Can I discard a card to the Morph ability and then discard the second card to the same Morph ability to turn the Raiders face-up and make him a Hellbent 5/5 to survive the Sudden Death?
A: No. Paying a Morph cost ends the Morph effect immediately. You cannot pay the cost and then respond by paying it again.
Q: I have a Venser, Shaper Savant in play and I copy it with a Vesuvan Shapeshifter. Does that allow me return another permanent or spell with the copied Shaper Savant?
A: It depends. If you play the Shapeshifter face up, then yes, the Shapeshifter will come into play as a Venser and its ability will trigger. However, if you turn the Shapeshifter face-up and copy Venser then this ability will not trigger as it did not come into play. Keep in mind that in either situation both the original Venser and the copy will go to the graveyard due to the Legend rule.
Q: My opponent has a Suspended Greater Gargadon and I have a Pull from Eternity in my hand. Can I wait for him to sacrifice all his permanents to the Gargadon before Pulling it?
A: Yes, that works. The Gargadon will remain in the removed from game zone until your opponent plays it. When he does play it as a spell, it will go on the stack. To do what you want jut wait for your opponent to remove the last time counter from the Gargadon. When he does, a triggered ability will go on the stack. Normally he'd play the Gargadon when this trigger resolves, but you can respond to this trigger by playing Pull from Eternity to put it into his graveyard.
Q: Is it possible to use Scryb Ranger's ability, returning a Forest, if I have no tapped creatures in order for me to use the ability?
A: You can use that ability if your main goal is to return a Forest to your hand. All you need to do is target a creature; it does not have to be tapped or controlled by you. At a minimum, you can always target the Scryb Ranger itself with its own ability.
Q: Can I use Panoptic Mirror to Imprint something like Ancestral Vision or Wheel of Fate? Would it cost 0 to Imprint, or is it even possible?
A: Yes, that works. These cards do not have a mana cost, so an effect that needs to know what its mana cost is will use zero. You can Imprint Ancestral Visions or Wheel of Fate on a Panoptic Mirror just by tapping the Mirror. Then, at the beginning of each of your upkeep steps, a copy of this card will be made. And as you are not paying its mana cost, you can play these copies.
Q: I know that Pithing Needle doesn't stop a Suspended card's triggered abilities, but does it stop the sacrifice ablity of Greater Gargadon? I believe it does, because it is an activated ability, and the Needle affects cards no matter what zone they are in.
A: You are correct. Greater Gargadon's ability that allows you to remove time counters from it is an activated ability. Pithing Needle's ability prevents the use of activated abilities of any source with the chosen name from being played, regardless of the zone that they are in.
Q: Will Copy Artifact trigger Vedalken Archmage's ability?
A: No. Copy Artifact is an enchantment spell. Vedalken Archmage's ability triggers when you play an artifact spell, not when an artifact comes into play.
Q: I have Protean Hulk in play and he dies and goes to the graveyard. Can I search for three Vinelasher Kudzu and four Dryad Arbor, put them into play, and make each Kudzu 5/5 because of the Arbors?
A: Yes, that works. When Protean Hulk's leaves-play triggered ability resolves, you can search for any number of creature cards with a combined converted mana cost of six or less. The Vinelasher Kudzus each have a converted mana cost of two and the Dryad Arbors each have a converted mana cost of zero, so you can get all of these cards. All of them will enter play at the same time. When they do, the abilities of each Vinelasher Kudzu will trigger once for each of the Dryad Arbors that entered play at the same time as it did. When all of these triggered abilities have resolved, your Kudzus will be 5/5 creatures.
Q: If I have twelve of the same card, but I've got three sets of four and each set is in a different language, can I in fact use all twelve in one deck?
A: No, you cannot. While Magic cards are printed in many languages, that does not make them different cards. You can only play four copies of a given card in a constructed deck, regardless of the language they are written in.
