Rules Tip of the Day: When you play a spell, regardless of which zone the spell comes from, it will go on the stack. If the spell is represented by a card, then if it is an instant or sorcery it will go to your graveyard when it resolves (unless is some other effect like Flashback that makes this card go elsewhere.) If it is a permanent card then it will enter play.
Q: Can I use Brass Gnat's untap ability more than once per turn? If so, can I pay one mana over and over to use the ability of a Firewhip attached to it as often as I want during my upkeep?
A: No, that does not work. Brass Gnat has a triggered ability that triggers once per turn, when your upkeep step begins. When this trigger resolves, you are given the option of paying one mana to untap the Gnat. The ability will not trigger again until your next upkeep step.
Q: Magus of the Future allows me to play the top card of my library. What happens if Ancestral Vision is on top of my library? It has no casting cost, so could I just draw three cards? Or could I Suspend it?
A: Neither. Magus of the Future allows you to play the top card of your library only. To play a card means to announce it and pay its mana cost. You can not Suspend cards that are on top of your library, only play them. Additionally, Ancestral Visions does not have a mana cost, so you won't be able to play it from the top of your library, even though you control Magus of the Future.
Q: I was wondering if Abundance and Enduring Renewal's abilities stack. If I chose nonland cards, and every nonland card was a creature, would I continue to discard all creatures?
A: No. When you would draw a card, both of these replacement effect are trying to replace what happens. As affected player you can choose which to apply first. If you replace your draw with Abundance's ability, then you will choose either land or non-land. Then you will reveal cards until you find a card of the chosen type. When you do, you put the card into your hand, but it is not drawn. Because of this, the effect from Enduring Renewal will have nothing to replace, because that ability only applies when you actually attempt to draw, not when you put a card in your hand without drawing.
Q: I have three red mana in my pool. I cast Seething Song. After Seething Song resolves, can I use Reiterate to copy Seething Song?
A: No, as the last part of the resolution of Seething Song it leaves the stack and goes to the graveyard. At this point, it is no longer a spell and cannot be targeted by Reiterate.
Q: What happens if my opponent controls Mana Web and I tap a Snow-Covered Swamp? Must I tap any lands that can produce black mana, or only lands that make black snow mana?
A: You'll have to tap all lands that can produce black mana. Whether or not mana is from a snow permanent is not part of that mana's type. Type of mana only refers to its color or lack of color.
Q: My friend had Rimescale Dragon in play and tapped three of my creatures. I was able to destroy the Dragon, but we weren't sure if my creatures would untap normally once the Dragon was gone.
A: Rimescale Dragon's ability that 'locks down' creatures with ice counters is a static ability that is only applied while the Dragon is in play. Once the Dragon leaves play, creatures with ice counters on them will untap.
Q: I have Sek'Kuar, Deathkeeper in play and a Suspended Greater Gargadon. My plan is to sacrifice most of my creatures using the Gargadon's ability to make Graveborn tokens and play Overrun. May I play Overrun before sacrificing my creatures to see if it is countered, or do the Graveborn tokens need to be in play first?
A: Overrun only affects those creatures you control that are in play when it resolves. In this example the creatures you sacrifice would get +3/+3 , but the Graveborn tokens would not, unless you were to play Overrun after they entered play.
Q: I Cytoshape a Death-Mask Duplicant into Zombie Boa. I activate the Boa's ability and choose a color. Then, after the Cytoshape's effects wear off, I use the Duplicant's activated ability to imprint Voice of All. Will the Duplicant have protection from the color chosen with the Boa ability?
A: No. The choice made when Zombie Boa's ability resolves only applies to that activated ability. It does not carry over into any other ability associated with that permanent, regardless what this permanent changes into. A color was not chosen as this Death-Mask Duplicant came into play, so it will not receive any protection ability.
Q: My play group has some disagreement about the following ruling for Panoptic Mirror: "You don't pay the spell's mana cost. If the spell has X in its mana cost, X is 0. You do pay any additional costs for that spell. You can't use any alternative costs." If I imprint Stroke of Genius on Panoptic Mirror can I still pay X to draw cards or is X always 0 no matter what?
A: X is zero no matter what. You cannot choose a value of X and are not given the option of paying any portion of this spell's mana cost.
