Rules Tip of the Day: The Graft ability does not target anything. You can move a +1/+1 counter onto a creature that cannot be targeted with the Graft triggered ability.
Q: When I play a Command spell from Lorwyn, do the two effects resolve simultaneously, or is there a moment's delay between the two? For example: can a Cryptic Command counter a Hellbent Demonfire on its own, by bouncing a permanent back to the Demonfire's controller's hand, then countering the spell? Or would it fail, as the abilities resolve at the same time?
A: What you want to do does not work, but not because these two effect are applied at the same time. When you resolve a Lorwyn Command, you apply the two chosen modes in the order that they are written on the card. Because the 'counter a spell' mode on Cryptic Command comes first, you will attempt to apply that first in any situation. Because you attempt to counter the targeted Demonfire before the targeted permanent is returned to its owner's hand, it will not counter the spell in this example.
Q: My opponent attacks with two creatures. I declare two blockers. He casts Devouring Light on one of my creatures. In response, I cast Wild Richochet on his Devouring Light. He argues that because Devouring Light targets a blocker, his attockers aren't legal targets for the spell or its copy. But Devouring Light says "attacking or blocking creature." Can I kill off his team here?
A: Devouring Light is not a modal spell; whether a creature is attacking or blocking does not matter, as long as it is one or the other. An individual Devouring Light or a copy of one can target an attacking or blocking creature. If the target is changed, it can be changed to any creature in combat.
Q: Does Pithing Needle stop Militia's Pride from making tokens?
A: No. Militia's Pride has a triggered ability, not an activated ability. It does not matter that there is a mana payment when this triggered ability resolves; it is still not affected by Pithing Needle's ability.
Q: During my opponent's upkeep, I play Mistbind Clique, Championing a Glen Elendra Pranksters. Can I use the triggered ability from Glen Elendra Pranksters to return the Mistbind Clique to my hand?
A: No, that ability triggers when you play a spell, not when a spell resolves. It will trigger and go on the stack when you play the Mistbind Clique spell; it will go on the stack on top of the Clique spell. When it does, you need to choose a target for the ability. The Clique is not in play yet, so it cannot be targeted.
Q: If I cast Briarhorn on my opponent's end of turn and target itself with its ability, will it be a 6/6 creature that can attack on my turn?
A: No. The effect from Briarhorn's comes-into-play ability lasts until the end of a turn, which occurs in the cleanup step, after the end of turn step. Effect like this cannot carry over into another turn.
Q: I was wanting to know what happens when you have Azorius First-Wing and Concerted Effort in play, does it create a paradox?
A: No. Concerted Effort's ability does not target anything. A creature in play with protection from enchantments can still be affected by Concerted Effort's effect. In fact, because you control an Azorius First-Wing, all creature you control will gain protection from enchantments.
Q: How exactly does Crovax, Ascendant Hero interact with Lightning Angel? I've been told the modifiers simply cancel each other out. Is this the case?
A: No. Lightning Angel is a white creature. It does not matter that is is also blue and red, this does not make it non-white. A permanent cannot be both white and non-white. Because of this, a Lightning Angel will be a 4/5 creature with Crovax, Ascendent Hero in play.
Q: Will Spirit Link on a creature that kills itself as a result of doing damage (such as Hammerfist Giant) grant life to its controller?
A: Yes, as the Spirit Link will be in play when damage is actually dealt. It does not matter that the Spirit Link will soon leave play after state-based effects are checked. (Technically, when they are checked a second time. The first time they are checked the Giant will leave play, and then immediately after they are checked again.)
Q: Can I pay for an Arcbound Wanderer with one mana of each color and one mana from a Snow permanent to give it six +1/+1 tokens?
A: No, Snow is not a color. The Sunburst ability only cares about the colors of mana that were spent to play the spell. What mana comes from a Snow permanent does not matter at all.
Q: Can I attack with my Chimeric Idol and Mishra's Factory at the same time?
A: Not normally. In order to attack with either of these permanents, they must be creatures when attacking creatures are declared. For that to happen, the Mishra's Factory would be tapped and therefore unable to be chosen as an attacking creature. [Though if you had a way to give creatures haste, you could play and animate the Factory after you activated the Idol. -Seamus]
