Rules Tip of the Day: Split Second spells cannot be used as counterspells. When a Split Second spell is on the stack, no other spells or abilities can be played. However, immediately after the Split Second spell resolves, all players will receive priority again and can play and resolve spells and abilities as usual..
Q: If I play Treacherous Urge and take a Nova Chaser, can I attack with it, or do I have to sacrifice it, since I don't have an Elemental to remove from the game?
A: You will have to sacrifice it. It does not matter that this Nova Chaser was not played; it came into play, which means that its comes-into-play ability will trigger. When this trigger resolves, you either need to remove an appropriate creature you control from the game or sacrifice the Nova Chaser.
Q: Would cards like Stinkdrinker Daredevil reduce the cost of spells with Changling?
A: Yes. Cards with Changeling are Giants.
Q: If I have Dolmet Gate and Vigor in play, will my attacking creatures benefits from Vigor, since all combat damage are prevented by the Gate?
A: Dolmen Gate has a prevention effect and Vigor has a replacement effect. Both try to prevent the combat damage that would be dealt to attacking creatures you control. As the controller of these creatures you can choose which effect to apply first. So it is up to you whether you want to just prevent the damage, or replace the damage by having your creatures get +1/+1 counters instead.
Q: I have Saffi Eriksdotter and Purity in play. My opponent plays Damnation, and I sacrifice Saffi, targeting Purity. Is Purity shuffled into my library before Saffi's ability brings it back?
A: It's up to you. Both Purity's ability and the ability created by Saffi's activated ability are triggered abilities. When this Damnation resolves and Purity is put into your graveyard, both of these abilities will trigger. As the controller of these two abilities, you can determine the order that they go on the stack and, therefore, the order that they resolve. To get Purity back in play, put the delayed triggered ability created by Saffi's ability on the stack last so it will resolve first.
Q: May I play a creature by its Evoke cost from the graveyard? I read in the Comprehensive Rules that Evoke functions in all zone. Is my interpretation correct?
A: You can pay the Evoke cost any time you can normally play the card. If there is an effect that allows you to play cards from your graveyard, then yes. But the Evoke ability will not, by itself, allow you to do this.
Q: I want to return Summon the School to my hand. I have three Merfolk creatures and a Merrow Commerce. Can I do this?
A: Yes. Merrow Commerce is a Merfolk that you control, so you can tap it as part of the activation cost of Summon the School's ability. It does not matter that it is an enchantment.
Q: If my opponent controls my Mudbutoon Torchrunner and it dies, which player decides what will receive the damage?
A: He does. He controlled it when it left play, so he will control its leaves-play triggered ability.
Q: My opponent has a Void Maw in play that has removed quite a few creature cards from the game. If this Void Maw is destroyed and reanimated, can he use those creature cards to activate the Maw's ability? Or is the connection between them and the Maw lost when it gets destroyed, because it will be treated as an entire new object?
A: You can use those creature cards that were removed from the game by this Void Maw, but that is due to a slight functional change that was made when Void Maw received errata. As written, you can only choose to use a creature card that was removed from the game to activate the ability of the Void Maw that removed it from the game. But due to some unintended interactions with cards like Leyline of the Void, Void Maw was given errata, so it removes creature cards from the game and puts corpse counters on them. Using the current official Oracle text, you can choose any creature card removed from the game with a corpse counter on it to activate Void Maw's ability, not just the cards that were removed by this specific Void Maw.
Q: Can I play a Rith's Grove or another lair land in order to return a City of Traitors to my hand, or will the City's effect resolve first?
A: When you play a lair land, both its comes-into-play ability and City of Traitor's ability will trigger at the same time. As the controller of these two abilities you can choose the order that they go on the stack and, therefore, the order that they resolve. To get the result you want, put City of Traitor's ability on the stack first, followed by the Lair land ability. This way you can return the City of Traitors to your hand before you are instructed to sacrifice it. This also works with the bounce lands from Ravnica block.
