Rules Tip of the Day: There is no such thing as ‘speed’ in Magic. Spells and abilities either use the stack or they do not. Some abilities can only be played at certain times, but that does not change when or how they resolve. Anything that does use the stack will wait to resolve just like anything else that uses the stack.
Q: I play Horobi, Death's Wail. After Horobi comes into play my opponent uses the untap ability on Minamo, School on Waters Edge and tries to target Horobi. I pointed out that my creature was not tapped so could not be untapped. He pointed out that it was a targeted ability so Horobi destroys himself. Who was right?
A: Your opponent was correct. The word ‘untap’ in the text of Minamo, School at Water’s Edge's ability is not a targeting restriction, it is an instruction to untap the targeted legendary creature when the ability resolves. If it could only target untapped creatures it would read, 'Untap target tapped legendary permanent.'
Q: If I animate a basic land is it still 'basic' or can I use a Sowing Salt on it?
A: It is still basic; animating a basic land does not make it non-basic. You will not be able to target it will Sowing Salt.
Q: With Kiki-Jiki and Intruder Alarm can I copy a land after I turn it in to a creature with one of the Genju? Will the Kiki-Jiki untap trigger from Intruder Alarm?
A: Yes you can make a copy of a land that is animated by a Genju enchantment. However the copy created by Kiki-Jiki's ability will be just a land, and not a creature. This is because it copies the base characteristics of the targeted permanent, and not any effects that are applied to that permanent. Because of this Intruder Alarm will not trigger, so your creatures will not untap.
Q: If I have Ronin Cliffrider equipped with Umezawa's Jitte, when I attack the Cliffrider deals 1 damage to all of my opponents creatures. Does this mean the Jitte gets two counters for every creature that receives damage from the Cliffrider’s ability?
A: No, that ability of the Cliffrider may deal damage in the combat step, but it is not combat damage. The Jitte's ability will not trigger when this ability resolves and damage is dealt.
Q: If I have Crucible of Worlds in play and I use Manabond would I be able to play all the lands in my graveyard?
A: No, those land cards are not in your hand. You may be able to play them as though they were in your hand, but they are still in the graveyard.
Q: How, exactly, does Show and Tell work? Does each player secretly choose a permanent, and then they all come into play simultaneously? If my permanent is Confiscate, can I steal theirs? I assume you would have to say 'I am putting a permanent into play? Does having Telepathy in play alter this (i.e. would the opponent have to say which card they will be putting?)?
A: When Show and Tell resolves the active player will choose and reveal a card, then the non-active player will. These cards will them come into play simultaneously. As these cards come into play at the exact same time you cannot choose to play Confiscate and enchant the permanent that your opponent chooses to put into play. Having Telepathy in play does not change how this works.
Q: I have a creature that became enchanted by Shackles and Seedborn Muse in play. Does my creature untap during my opponent's turn?
A: Yes. The Shackles only prevents the creature from untapping during your untap step, there is not restriction on it untapping during your opponent's untap step.
Q: How would Drain Power work if my opponent had Mishra's Workshop? Would the mana only be useable for artifacts or would it lose this requirement?
A: You will get three colorless mana added to your pool and this mana will not have the restriction that it has to be spent on artifact spells. When a spell or ability refers to a type of mana it means its color, or lack of color, and does not replicate any restrictions on what that mana can be used for.
