Rules Tip of the Day: Creatures in combat will only deal combat damage if they are still in play and still in combat when the combat damage step starts and combat damage is assigned and goes on the stack.
Q: My husband and I were arguing about whether the land enchanted by the Genju of the Realm becomes a colorless or a multicolored Spirit.
A: Genju of the Realm does not change the color of the enchanted land, so when animated it will be colorless, unless some other effect gives it a color.
Q: If you have multiple Sosuke's Summons in your graveyard when a nontoken Snake comes into play can you get all of them back to your hand or only one?
A: When a non-token Snake comes into play under your control, the ability of both Sosuke's Summons in your graveyard will trigger and both will come back to your hand.
Q: I have a question about Honden of Night's Reach in a multi-player game. Playing against four other players, do I have to select one target when the card comes into playand it always be that one player or can I select a different target each turn?
A: At the beginning of each of your upkeeps, when this ability goes on the stack you can choose a different opponent.
Q: I’ve have SenseiĀ“s Divining Top in play. My opponent tries to destroy it with Naturalize. Can I respond to that by doing this:
(1) Play a Sharpnel Blast and
(2) Respond to that by tapping the Top to put the card drawing ability on the stack
(3) Respond to that by paying one mana to put the look/rearrange the top three cards ability on the stack
And then let the things resolve in last in/first out order? If its not possible then I would like to know why.
A: You can get the result you want, but not by playing spells and abilities in that order. Because you sacrifice an artifact as an additional cost to play Shrapnel Blast you'll need to activate the Top's card-drawing ability before playing Shrapnel Blast. What you want to do is activate the Top's card ability first, and then in any order activate the Top's other ability and play the Shrapnel Blast.
Q: I thought of an interesting combo, but I want to make sure it works. Suppose I have Brain Freeze Imprinted on Isochron Scepter. I then play Chain of Smog and target myself. Can I continue to make copies of the Chain and target myself over and over (at no cost), despite the fact that I have no cards left in my hand? And can I then use the Isochroned-Brain Freeze to force my opponent to toss the top 3 cards of his/her library into his/her graveyard as many times as I just played Chain of Smog?
A: No. While you can play the Chain of Smog targeting yourself and make copies of this Chain over and over again, this trick does not work the way you want. When the Chain makes copies of itself this does not count at playing an additional spell. This means that doing this will not increase the number of spells played that turn for the Storm ability.
Q: If I have Caltrops in play, and my opponent attacks with Goblin Piledriver and a few 1/1 Goblin baddies, do these other Goblins stay in play long enough to activate the Piledriver's triggered ability.
A: No they won't. As you control the Caltrops and it is your turn, when these creatures attack the Piledriver ability will go on the stack first and followed by the Caltrops abilities. The Caltrops abilities will resolve first and deal 1 point of damage to all attacking creatures, dealing lethal damage to those with one toughness. Because you count the number of other attacking goblins and calculate the bonus from the Piledriver's ability when the Piledriver's triggered ability resolves, the Piledriver ability will not count those attacking goblins that have left play.
Q: Can I play Humble on Phyrexian Dreadnought as it comes into play and not have to sacrifice creatures?
A: That does not work. The Dreadnought has errata so you have to sacrifice creature as the Dreadnought comes into play. You need to sacrifice these creatures before you can target the Dreadnought with Humble
Q: Could I play Phyrexian Dreadnought with Humility in play and not have to sacrifice creatures?
A: Once again no, as you will have to sacrifice before it comes into play and becomes a creature.
Q: I play Platinum Angel and then play Transcendence. On the following turn, my life total becomes more than 20. My question is, since Transcendence says whenever my life total is over 20 I lose the game, but at the same time the Platinum Angel says that I can't lose the game, which effect wins out?
A: Neither really; the game will end in a draw. Transcendence's ability that causes you to lose when you have 20 or more life is a state-based trigger. When this triggered ability resolves you will not lose the game because of the Angel, so the ability does nothing. However this ability will then trigger again and go on the stack. This will cause a loop, and unless someone can break it the game will end in a draw.
