Game 1:
"Now is the most strategic part of this format: Winning the die roll," said Labarre - which he proceeded to do as both players drew their initial seven. Nicolas was dissatisfied with his first hand, and Parised them away for a new six.
Nicolas kicked things off with a turn 2 Thran Dynamo, while Kamiel chose to cast a Metalworker. Nicolas passed turn 3 with no action, while Kamiel tapped his Metalworker, and revealed two Myr Incubators, two Tangle Wires, and another Metalworker, generating ten mana from the Worker alone. He used that mana to cast a Myr Incubator and a Tangle Wire, and then used his Great Furnace, City of Traitors, and Ancient Tomb to sacrifice the Incubator and generate twenty-two 1/1 creatures.
Nicolas drew a card and shrugged, as they shuffled up for Game 2. A turn 4 kill for Kamiel; a little slow by the day's standards thus far.
Kamiel 1 - Nicolas 0
Game 2:
Nicolas drew a one-land hand with a Vampiric Tutor and thought hard about what to do. He chose to Paris again, decrying the brutality of decks tuned to their absolute maximum kill efficiency, but ones that cough up mulligans more often than Bob Hope on a golf course.
The second set of six were better for Nicolas, and both players started with Islands. Nicolas traded a Brainstorm for the best of his next three cards, and cast Mana Severance as Kamiel shrugged. He then removed fifteen lands from his deck, effectively thinning it to"good spells only" and setting up his combo with four cards left in hand.
Kamiel laid a Seat of the Synod and cast Grim Monolith and Metalworker, while Nicolas swung the card control advantage back in his favor by casting Lobotomy to take all of Kamiel's Tinkers. On the next turn, Nicolas played a Grim Monolith of his own, and cast Goblin Charbelcher before passing the turn.
Kamiel had no action on his turn aside from swinging with his undersized Metalworker, and at the end of Kamiel's turn, Nicolas said,"Charbelcher on you? There are no lands, so I will just flip my deck over, and you will take... um... Thirty-four."
Kamiel 1 - Nicolas 1
Game 3:
This time the mulligan bug bit Kamiel, and he Parised into six that he could work with. Labarre kept his seven and cast a first-turn Talisman of Dominance and Duress, stripping Myr Incubator from Kamiel's hand. His own turn saw him cast Goblin Charbelcher, as Kamiel merely attacked with his Metalworker and dropped a third land. An end step activation of Charbelcher misfired, hitting City of Traitors as the top card, while Nicolas cast Duress on his own turn, ripping a Stifle away from Kamiel's hand.
Kamiel's second Metalworker hit the board, but at the end of Kamiel's turn, Nicolas simply cast Vampiric Tutor for Mana Severance, and then activated the Charbelcher, causing Kamiel to slide his hand across the board in concession.
Nicolas:"Extended is just shuffle, shuffle, shuffle, do something completely degenerate and hope your opponent does not. I am thinking the Lobotomy was very fine. I would also like to say hello to Marie-Laure."
Kamiel:"I like the format and these kinds of decks, but still sometimes it is pretty random."
