Bob Maher - who is, of course, the Great One, sat down running the newly-developed version of Turbo Oath, which runs Isochron Scepter and Fire / Ice to take advantage of it. His opponent, who was part of the team that won the last Team Pro Tour, is Brock Parker who has a teched-out Psychatog deck in his hands.
Game One
Bob won the coin flip. He declared he was going first, and the game was opened with a Treetop Village on his side. Brock dropped an island and then passed the turn. Brock started his second turn and Bob immediately kicked off the counter wars with an Ice that went to Brock's only land. That Ice was Force Spiked, and then Brock followed up with another island. He cast Brainstorm and then passed the turn.
Maher used this situation to drop another land, and the Village got sent into the Red Zone.
Brock dropped a Flooded Strand and popped it, taking him to sixteen. The turn passed to Maher, who laid an island as Brock tried for an Accumulated Knowledge at the end of Maher's turn. The turn that followed ended with Bob casting a Cunning Wish, which resolved, nabbing a Fact or Fiction.
Leery of the Brock's black mana, Bob left the Village home and passed the turn. Brock used this opportunity to use his second Accumulated Knowledge. Maher looked over the field as the he considered what would have been two-mana Inspiration, and then cast Krosan Reclamation to shuffle the other Accumulated Knowledge back into Brock's library. Brock gave Bob a wild-eyed look and drew his lone card.
Maher swung in with the Village again, dropping Brock to thirteen.
Brock asked how many cards Bob had in hand - the answer was five - then quietly flipped through his cards, considering his options. He dropped a Tog on the table and Bob rifled through his land, than flipped an island atop his other island. He Mana Leaked the Psychatog, which Brock let through. The Village went back to the red zone, slamming Brock down to ten.
Brock followed it up with a second Psychatog, which met a second Mana Leak. Brock gave the Leak a moment of consideration, and returned Maher's counter with a Force Spike. Tapped out, Bob let the leak die and the king of Togs hit the table. But now Brock was down to only a single untapped blue mana. Maher took this opportunity to cast an Oath of Druids.
Brock swung in with his Psychatog and then passed the turn, which allowed Bob's to Oath up the expected Cognivore. There were only four instants in Brock's yard, but within Bob's there was a formidable fourteen. This meant the Cognivore was a massive 18/18, and a single swipe would take the match for Bob. Brock burned the end of Bob's turn on a Wish, which found a Terror. The Terror flipped insouciantly into Brock's hand, then smacked the Cognivore out of the sky.
Bob played a Fact of Fiction at the end of Brock's turn, revealing a Chrome Mox, a Wooded Foothills, a Treetop Village, another Fact or Fiction, and a Moment's Peace. Brock looked over them and piled the Mox with Fact or Fiction, and Treetop Village and Wooded Foothills with the Moment's Peace on top.
Remember that Moment's Peace. Bob took the Peace pile into his hand and then moved into his turn, where he dropped the second Treetop Village on the board. Brock tried a second Accumulated Knowledge for two and Bob let it through. This was a quiet thinking man's game - a surprise, given all the hype about how fast Extended was!
Brock requested what Bob was at, and Bob responded with a nineteen, yawning. Brock considered his hand while the spectators taunted him, as Bob flipped through his opponent's graveyard. The Tog was swung into the Red zone and was let through, then Brock back into his deep thinking. Brock looked quietly at his hand and gently placed a Wonder on the table.
Bob went,"Woooo!"
The spectators got a laugh as they noticed the Wonder - and Brock pointed out with a chuckle out that it hadn't even resolved yet; he might counter it. Bob let it resolve and cast a Cunning Wish, which found a Krosan Reclamation. Bob's Reclamation returned the Cognivore and a Counterspell to Bob's rather-slim library.
When the upkeep hit, Bob flipped over almost the entire pile that remained and found the Cognivore, which was now well past twenty power. Bob drew for his turn and then flopped a Chrome Mox on the table, imprinting an Oath of Druids. Bob passed the turn and Brock did nothing on his, which led Bob to Ice the terrifying Wonder. Brock countered, which prompted Bob to ask how many cards were in Brock's hand.
"Six," he replied.
Bob cast a Krosan Reclamation, targeting two Counterspells on his hand. Brock replied with a smirk as he intoned"Two Counterspells?" then asked how many cards Bob had in his hand.
"Three."
Brock countered the Reclamation and Bob untapped his lands. Bob cast Krosan Reclamation again and went through his graveyard, and searched out nothing in particular. He chose to target the two Counterspells again.
"Can I see your library?" asked Brock, looking at the massive graveyard,"Oh, wait - I meant your graveyard." Brock activated his Polluted Delta before a counter hit the Reclamation; Bob countered the Counterspell and the Krosan Reclamation resolved.
Brock poked at his cards with his gum, then asked Bob what he was at again.
"Eighteen." Bob replied. Brock went through his graveyard and then attempted to figure out the Tog math. They discussed it briefly and then Brock realized he had failed to count in the Psychatog's one power.
The Psychatog went into the red zone and slammed into Maher. Brock pumped it up to eighteen power...
And then Bob quietly flipped the Moment's Peace in his hand onto the table.
Brock laughed as he realized he had forgotten about the Moment's Peace, revealed by the previous Fact or Fiction.
They discussed afterwards that Brock probably could have won, after he considered his huge error. Brock pointed out,"If only I hadn't noticed my Psychatog! I could have probably won!"
"But I would swung with my whole team next turn and probably finished you off before you could Oath up another Psychatog." Bob replied
"Yeah, but I had two Smothers in hand."
"Oh... Well, that would do it...."
Maher 1 - Parker 0
Game 2:
They shuffled up for game two. Bob asked if Brock was going to go first and he replied,"I hope so."
Brock led with an island and Bob dropped a Treetop Village on the table. Brock's second land was a Polluted Delta and Bob followed with Shivan Reef, then tried to drop an Isochron Scepter on the table. Brock simply Force Spiked it.
Brock hadn't found his third land yet and passed the turn back to Bob, who dropped a Wooded Foothills on the table. Brock went for an island with Polluted Delta and then cast Accumulated Knowledge, drawing into another card. Two cards later, and Brock still had not found a third land to play.
Bob attempted to drop a Mox, which resolved. Bob considered the Imprint activation and placed a Forbid on the table accidentally - whoops - and then snatched it up and considered Counterspell as the right card to imprint instead. Then Bob pitched away his Wooded Foothills and dropped a second Isochron Scepter, with two mana open. Brock countered the Scepter with Annul, then Spiked the resultant counter, bringing Bob down a little. Up to five mana to Brock's three. Bob's Village was made to swing again and then had an island Iced at the end of his turn. Bob activated the Village again and Brock was getting the beatdown, while Brock found his fourth land.
Brock attempted to Fact or Fiction, which Bob headed off with a buybacked Forbid. Brock untapped and looked through his hand - the threat of the Treetop leaving him with his life only at ten.
He cast another Fact or Fiction, and that one resolved. The piles were Island, Polluted Delta, and Island, and Annul with Cunning Wish. Brock flipped through his hand and took the land. He flipped the Polluted Delta onto the table and passed the turn. Treetop Village smacked into Brock again, dropping him seven life. Brock made his draw and then played another land, an Underground River. After a rocky start, Brock had rebuilt his mana base and had started to threaten the Treetop Villages with untapped black mana.
Brock went down to six after he used his Polluted Delta and dropped a Psychatog onto the table. Brock attempted a Psychatog, but that was neutralized by a Forbid. The Village got sent in the next turn, but it was nailed by a Smother, which dropped Brock to five as he had used up his only other black source. Brock ended the turn by Accumulated Knowledging for two cards and then drew for his turn. He held a full hand to Bob's slim hand.
Bob dropped down an Oath of Druids, but that too met a Counterspell - as did the next Oath he tried that turn. But the second counter met a Mana Leak. Brock looked at his two untapped lands and let the Oath resolve. Brock looked through his opponent's graveyard and found the offensive Moment's Peace. He flipped it out with a Coffin Purge, then Fact or Fictioned, but Bob pointed out the game was Brock's with the Tog math being what it was.
Brock swung in with the Tog, totaled up the math, and Bob was dead.
Maher 1 - Parker 1
Brock smirked and said,"It would have been nice if I had attacked into the Peace again...."
Game 3:
Bob played, of course.
Brock looked over his hand, said,"Okay, sir," and Bob led the third game with another Treetop village. Brock took a moment then dropped an island on the table.
Bob tried for an Isochron Scepter - which hit the board, and he placed a Fire/Ice under it.
"Hey, you can cast either one?" Brock asked Bob Maher.
"Yeah," Bob replied with a smile.
"Oooh, that's techy!" Brock shot back.
The Ice went off on Brock's upkeep as Bob pulled ahead in this game, now having recovered the price of the imprint... Brock looked at the world's best Icy and didn't seem to like the stress of it. Brock looked quite sad. Brock tried to Cunning Wish at end of turn - It resolved and he flipped through his sideboard.
Bob didn't use the"Icy Scepter" on his next upkeep, and Brock dropped another land. He passed the turn, to which Bob used the Foothills to search out a mountain, then iced the River with the Isochron scepter again. He passed the turn along and Brock considered his hand. Brock flipped an Intuition onto the table - and after it resolved, he dug up the Accumulated Knowledge engine.
Brock drew and Bob was looking hurried as he hoped he would win this one. Bob tapped down the Underground River and the turn went back to Bob.
Bob tried for a Chrome Mox and placed an Oath of druids under it. Bob tried for another Isochron Scepter and Brock stared at his hand unhappily. Brock Brainstormed and flipped through his hand. He moved to Annul the Scepter, which countered the second artifact. Bob dropped his second Village on the table and passed along his turn.
Brock's turn began and Bob moved to tap down a land using the Isochron Scepter - which Brock tapped to Chain of Vapor the imprinted Scepter, snapping it back to Bob's hand. Brock then AK'd for three while Bob was tapped out.
Suddenly the game was swinging back to Brock, who had just about caught up on cards. Bob tried to drop the Isochron Scepter again, but it met a Forbid. The counter resolved and Brock dropped another land during the following turn. He moved to his end step where Bob Wished; Brock Wished in response and it resolved. Brock went for a Fact or Fiction and added it to his hand. At the end of Brock's turn Bob Iced a land - this time from his hand, not a Scepter - and Bob attempted a Fact or Fiction. Brock countered that and went to Fact or Fiction in response. In response to the Fact or Fiction Bob used Fact or Fiction of his own and the piles were Krosan Reclamation, Yavimaya Coast, with Reclamation and Cognivore paired with Mana Leak. Bob had taken the Mana leak then utilized it to stamp out Brock's Fact or Fiction.
Bob put the Treetop Village in the Red Zone and it was met with a Smother. Time was running out. Brock Intuitioned and then got a Deep Analysis for his troubles. He Analyzed twice in a row, then frowned. At the end of the turn Bob, Cunning Wished and then time was called.
Five turns left...
Bob wished up a Teferi's Response and then went into turn 1 of the final five. Bob swung in with two Treetop Villages, dropping Brock to nine life. Brock played a Psychatog next turn, and Bob stared it down with only two turns remaining. Bob passed the turn.
Brock Fact or Fictioned on his last turn and Bob looked over the two piles of cards. Brock took a Force Spike with a Smother and put it into his hand. Brock swung in with his Psychatog and then looked over Bob's graveyard. He considered the Psychatog math. He moved in with the Tog, piled up the cards - and then Bob tapped two mana to Moment's Peace. Brock Forbid it.
Bob flashed back the Moment's Peace. Brock tried to Counterspell the flashed back Moment's peace, but Bob met it with a counter of his own and then Brock's gaze dropped. Brock took a moment to do the math and then conceded the game when Bob flashed him a Cunning Wish that could go for a Fire / Ice. With Brock at eight and two Treetop Villages on the table, Bob Maher would kill him on the last possible turn of the game.
Bob Maher wins 2-1 in a hard-fought match that went to the maximum amount of time.
