Rules Tip of the Day: Combat damage is the damage dealt by attacking and blocking creatures in the combat damage step; it is equal to the creature's power. Other spells and abilities can deal damage in the combat phase or combat damage step, but that does not make it combat damage.
Q: When someone casts Vendilion Clique while another is in play, does the comes-into-play ability still trigger?
A: Yes. When this Clique spell resolves, the second Clique will come into play and its ability will trigger. Before this trigger can go on the stack, both this new Clique and the other in play will go to the graveyard. However, that will not prevent the comes-into-play triggered ability of the second Clique from going on the stack or from resolving.
Q: Can a nonblack Changeling, such as Amoeboid Changeling, block a creature with fear, such as Nezumi Cutthroat?
A: No. Changeling does not make a creature black or give it the artifact type. ("Artifact creature" is not a creature type.)
Q: When Horde of Notions targets an Elemental in the graveyard, what rules apply as far as timing of the card?
A: Horde of Notions' ability tells you to play the targeted Elemental card as its activated ability resolves, so that is the only time you can play it. This means that the only limitation is when you can play the activated ability of Horde of Notion.
Q: If my opponent plays a Body Double, may I play Trickbind in response, in order to stop Body Double from copying a creature in a graveyard?
A: No. Body Double does not have a triggered ability. Its ability is a static ability that creates a replacement effect as Body Double enters play. When it is applied, the controller of the Body Double will choose a creature in a graveyard to copy. This ability does not use the stack and cannot be responded to. In order to prevent the Body Double becoming a copy of a creature card in a graveyard, you'll have to prevent it from coming into play.
Q: If Null Profusion is in play and you control it, what happens when you use the grandeur ability of Korlash, Heir of Blackblade or Tarox Bladewing?
A: Nothing. Grandeur is an activated ability, not a spell. You may be discarding a specifically named card, but that does not mean you are playing a card. Because of this, Null Profusion's ability will not trigger, and you will not draw a card.
Q: I have a Riftmarked Knight suspended. I remove the last counter in my upkeep. My opponent plays a Powersink to counter it. Do I get the 2/2 black knight from playing the Riftmarked Knight?
A: Yes. The ability that puts a 2/2 black Knight with Protection from White into play triggers when you remove the last time counter from the suspended Riftmarked Knight. This ability will resolve and put the black Knight into play, even if the Riftmarked Knight spell is countered.
Q: Can I respond to a Momentary Blink in some way with Pull from Eternity to put the target of my opponent's Blink into their graveyard?
A: No. If you respond to Momentary Blink by playing Pull from Eternity, then the targeted creature will be in play. And you cannot play Pull from Eternity during the middle of Momentary Blink's resolution. When Momentary Blink resolves, the targeted creature leaves play and then returns to play; no one gets priority between these two events. In other words, what you want to do does not work.
Q: I control a Reflecting Pool and a Snow-Covered Island, can I tap the Reflection Pool for Snow mana?
A: The type of mana means it color or lack of color only. Snow is not a mana type, it is a permanent supertype. Only mana from Snow permanents is Snow mana. As the Pool is not a Snow permanent, the mana from it will not be Snow mana. But it will be blue.
Q: Can I reduce the forecast cost of Pride Of The Clouds if I have one or more Heartstones in play.
A: No, the Pride of the Clouds card in your hand is not a creature. It is a creature card, but creatures only exist in play.
Q: I have Opal Titan and then someone plays a morphed creature, will I then have a creature that has protection from colorless?
A: No. Colorless is not a color. A face-down spell will not have any color, so Opal Titan will not gain any protection abilities.
A: If a creature has protection from green, and an opponent attacks with a creature that has both green and red in its casting cost, would a blocking creature have to have protection from both green and red for the protection to have any effect?
A: No, this attacking creature is both red and green, a creature with protection from red or protection from green will not receive any damage from it. This blocking creature does not need to have both abilities in order to not receive combat damage.
