Round 10: Adam Prosak (CounterTop) vs. Gene Richtsmeier (Junk)
Counterbalance this round with Moms and Bobs.
Both sitting at X-2, the two SCG writers stared each other down in a showdown between CounterTop and G/W/B Midrange.
Gene: I'll play first.
Adam: Good choice.
Gene played the first spell in Mother+of+Runes (Mom), while Adam followed up with Preordain. Gene tried another powerful creature with a nickname, Dark+Confidant (Bob), but was denied by a Force+of+Will. When he tried it again the next turn, Counterspell took it off the table. As an act of revenge, Gene Wastelanded Adam's Tundra. Adam Preordained and cast a Top with his two lands.
Gene had another Wasteland for Adam's fresh Glacial+Fortress, but Adam wasn't running out of lands yet. He played Scalding+Tarn, which found an Island. Adam Topped himself into a Counterbalance, making it harder for Gene to guarantee his spells resolving without a little luck. Still, Adam wouldn't have the right mana cost at the top of his library every time. Tapping three, Gene summoned Knight+of+the+Reliquary, which got through the gate. Perhaps Gene would manage to get all the way—Knight was currently a 5/5.
Adam went to 12 upon attacks, and Gene played yet another three-drop in Mirran+Crusader. This was the play Adam had been waiting for.
Adam had to call a judge over for his Brainstorm into Terminus play, just to make sure he was doing it correctly—he revealed the top card as Terminus and drew two more. He then had to crack a fetchland for a Plains in order to cast his Terminus, wiping out Gene's board. Suddenly things weren't looking so good for Gene.
"Let's just play another game," Gene said, and the two sideboarded and shuffled up.

Adam Prosak is X-2 in the Invitational.
"I will not block. Well, I'll block with my face," said Adam taking 2 from Dark+Confidant.
Gene's Sylvan+Library was Force of Willed, and Adam added Counterbalance to finish the combo. Gene went for Stoneforge+Mystic, which resolved and found a Batterskull. Bojuka+Bog took out Adam's graveyard, and Swords+to+Plowshares took out the Mystic.
On his next turn, Gene's Knight+of+the+Reliquary forced its way through Counterbalance but couldn't stay down against Jace%2C+the+Mind+Sculptor—back to the hand it went. In response to Gene's Noble+Hierarch, Adam flipped Top to counter it. Gene then cast Stoneforge+Mystic for Sword+of+Light+and+Shadow.
Adam boosted his board with Baneslayer+Angel, an oldie but goodie, and replayed his Top. Gene put a Mirran+Crusader down and put his Sword on it—it had protection from just about everything. Unfortunately, it did not have protection from Swords+to+Plowshares flashbacked by Snapcaster+Mage.
Gene put Knight+of+the+Reliquary on the stack, which got Counterspelled, then took 5 from the Angel. Gene was at 8, while Adam was up to 18. After Batterskull took to the field, Adam used Jace to bounce the token. It was enough for Gene to scoop them up.
