Round 15: David Thomas (4C Control) vs. Kenny Joa (G/W Aggro)
David and Kenny were playing for a top 8 slot. No big deal, right? “It’s just another game of Magic!” said Kenny. David was equally cheery. “Yeah, it just means one of us gets to go get food after this.”
David is 'rocking' with Thragtusks this weekend!
The players both seemed friendly and amiable as they prepared for the match, which was nice because they both decided to mulligan their opening hands.
“Shuffling, shuffling and more shuffling.”
But once things got underway, the pace of play was lightning quick.
David mulliganed all the way down to five before leading with Darkslick+Shores. Kenny had Razorverge+Thicket to begin his game. David played Swamp, and Kenny made the first nonland play of the game with Elvish+Visionary. Cavern+of+Souls named Beast for David before he passed back. Kenny played Sword+of+Feast+and+Famine before attacking for one and ending his turn, and David played Forbidden+Alchemy. David untapped and played a Plains to cast Lingering+Souls. Kenny equipped the Sword and attacked, and David blocked with a Spirit.
David flashed back the Souls before passing, and on Kenny’s next turn he played and equipped Mirran+Crusader to the Mirrodin Besieged mythic. Another Lingering+Souls staved off the damage for a bit, but Kenny added Batterskull to his team. David cast Oblivion+Ring and removed the troublesome Sword from the game, but another large problem-causing artifact remained. Kenny’s force swung in and took David down to 3, and he added Thragtusk. David once again missed his fifth land drop, and Kenny’s ‘Tusk died to Doom+Blade upon declaration of attackers. Another Thragtusk came down for Kenny, taking his life total all the way up to 42, and unable to find what he needed David scooped up his cards.
All of game 1 happened in five and a half minutes.
Kenny 1, David 0.
Once again, David caught the mulligan bug while Kenny decided to keep. Once he decided to keep his six, David led with Evolving+Wilds. Avacyn’s Pilgrim came down for Kenny off of Razorverge+Thicket. David fetched up Plains with his Wilds before untapping and adding Darkslick+Shores. Pilgrim pecked at David’s life total, and he added Birds+of+Paradise. Isolated+Chapel and pass was David’s next turn, but once again Kenny had his Batterskull, this time on turn three, to which David cast Forbidden+Alchemy, untapped and cast Oblivion+Ring. Kenny had one of his own though, and got it right back. Phantasmal+Image for David (on a Bird) was quickly Fiend Huntered away. But Sun+Titan on the following turn after no relevant plays brought it back. Oblivion+Ring number two took out the Giant and the Giant Illusion met its end to a Dismember. Attacks took David to 7, but as the old saying goes the control deck was only losing up until the point it won.
Kenny's also on the Thragtusk plan, but with a different supporting cast!
Thragtusk came into play for David’s team and he passed. Kenny equipped his Batterskull to Birds+of+Paradise, and a turn later it got Doom Bladed in combat. It then swapped hands to Fiend+Hunter. Sun+Titan brought back Phantasmal+Image for Oblivion+Ring (on Batterskull) with his Unburial+Rites, and his Thragtusk attack took Kenny to 23. Kenny did not add anything to his board on his turn and passed, and David brought back a couple of lands with his Sun+Titan triggers on his next attack step, and after blocks Kenny went to 14 and the Image hit the bin.
Kenny untapped and cast Mirran+Crusader to try to maintain the status quo, but David was working on all cylinders now. He cast Liliana+of+the+Veil, making Kenny sacrifice an Elvish+Visionary, and when he attacked and brought back a pair of Images, one as Titan and one as Fiend+Hunter removing Crusader, Kenny dropped to ten. The Thragtusk died during combat and the Image holding the Fiend+Hunter down got a Dismember to the face, but even after that flurry it was too much for Kenny to recover and the players got ready for game three.
Kenny 1, David 1.
Kenny had the play for the first time in the match and used that opportunity to play lands for a couple turns with David. Mirran+Crusader on turn three was the first turn of the game, and Lingering+Souls was the first from the Solar Flare player. Thragtusk on turn five was Kenny’s next play, and after a few chumps on the Crusader David had nothing but lands in play. He end of turned a Forbidden+Alchemy and cast Ponder on his main phase to dig deep for answers, but ended up passing the turn with four up. Go+for+the+Throat took out the Beast, and after combat the singleton Batterskull in Kenny’s deck made an appearance once again.
Lingering+Souls was joined by Snapcaster+Mage on Divine+Offering (it was Alchemy fodder) for David, but a Mirran+Crusader got a Sword+of+War+and+Peace. Day+of+Judgment cleared the action, but Kenny had a nice Grafdigger’s Cage for David’s flashback-heavy deck. He also suited up Birds+of+Paradise. Kenny used Liliana+of+the+Veil to take out the Bird, but Kenny had another Mirran+Crusader to take up the helm. After discarding it to Liliana, Oblivion+Ring came in off of Sun+Titan to deal with the equipment. Kenny had one of his own though, and he got to reequip the Sword. First Strike damage took out the Liliana and the regular dealt to David, setting life totals at 23 for Kenny and 11 for David.
Vault+of+the+Archangel made his Sun+Titan very scary indeed, and it bringing back Liliana on attacks wasn’t exactly cheery news for Kenny either. Crusader got sacrificed to her ability, and Kenny had a Restoration+Angel to reequip to the Sword. Kenny became hellbent from Liliana’s activation on David’s turn, and he once again swung with the Titan. Kenny only drew a Sword+of+Feast+and+Famine for his turn and while it made a nigh-unkillable 6/7 Restoration+Angel, one of the ways to kill it was to use Liliana’s -2 ability. David did so, and attacked once again with his Titan.
It was almost perfunctory from there. David kept applying pressure, and when he activated Liliana to make Kenny discard his last card, he responded with Restoration+Angel. David brought back Snapcaster+Mage with Sun+Titan targeting Go+for+the+Throat (his graveyard was quite full of discarded cards and Alchemized goodies) Kenny saw the writing on the wall and wished David good luck in the top 8, as he was almost assuredly able to draw in after this round.
David 2, Kenny 1.
